Courthouse to close for works

Wicklow People (West Edition) - - NEWS - By EIMEAR DODD

ARKLOW Courthouse is to close temporarily as long-awaited renovation works get under way shortly.

District Court sittings, which are usually held in the courthouse at Parade Ground, will be held for six months in a temporary venue at the Rock Parnells GAA Centre on the Emoclew Road.

The move means that members of the public could face a 20-minute walk up the Wexford Road from the existing building to its temporary location from September 11.

Wicklow County Council are to undertake the works on behalf of the Court Services which will see the addition of two new consultation rooms, secure rear parking for the prison service, a victim support room and CCTV in the courthouse which dates back to the 1840s.

Solicitor Deirdre Burke of Burke Legal said the venue was ‘not ideal’ from a family law perspective but ‘it’s a temporary measure for a longer-term improvement.’

‘I don’t anticipate any negative impact on privacy. At the courthouse, courtgoers are either inside or outside. The renovations are so needed, particularly private areas where people can consult with their solicitors. The improvements are long-overdue.’

Cllr Pat Fitzgerald, Cathaoirleach of Arklow Municipal District welcomed news that the works will commence shortly. ‘The upgrade has been sought for a long time. The move is only a temporary measure.’

Speaking to the Wicklow People, a spokesperson for the Courts Service said the works will include other renovations to the building to improve the comfort of courtgoers.

‘A series if improvements are also being made to improve courtgoers comfort. These include new toilets, new flooring, replastering, upgraded heating and lighting, and a new lobby and waiting area.

‘Costs of the works in the area of the Courthouse for use by the Courts Service are approximately €120,000.‘

‘These will be funded by the Courts Service, and Wicklow Courty Council, who successfully applied for funding for this project from the Urban Regeneration Development Fund as part of their wider plans for the redevelopment of Arklow Town centre.’
