A PROHIBITION notice on bathing in Wicklow Harbour will remain in place until further sampling has occurred.

The notice was put in place on Friday after consultation between Wicklow County Council and the HSE, with the public warned that swimming at Wicklow Harbour could cause illness.

Bating was prohibited because of a sewage overflow upstream. Samples were taken on Friday from Wicklow Harbour and Leitrim River following an incident of a sewage storm overflow to the river from the public sewer that coincided with heavy rainfall.

The prohibition notice remained in place over the weekend, forcing the cancellation of Wicklow Swimming Club’s races on Sunday, including the seniors race for the Rocky Newsome Memorial Cup.

The HSE advised that the prohibition notice should remain in place and recommended further sampling of the bathing water which took place on Monday. A further update will issue today, (Wednesday, July 24).
