Evans’ future up for decision
County Board expected to rule at Tuesday meeting
WICKLOW football manager John Evans is still to decide on his future role with the county but a meeting held last night (Tuesday) by the County Executive may well have taken that decision out of his hands.
It is understood that the meeting, originally scheduled for Monday evening, was rearranged for Tuesday and that a decision on the Kerry native’s future was to be made on the night.
Having completed his two-year term as senior football manager, along with his under-20 role, the Kerry native, who has an option of a third term, had not made a decision regarding his future with the county by Tuesday morning (yesterday).
Having completed a dismal Allianz National Football League campaign that sees Wicklow still locked in Division 4 after some early promise by a squad capable of pushing towards promotion, the side failed to deliver, with the result that they face another league campaign in Division 4 in 2020.
Despite this dismal league campaign, Wicklow put up a reasonable showing in the championship when going out to Kildare in their opening game, but it was a game they never looked like achieving a result from.
It was also defeat in the qualifiers away to Leitrim, while the under-20 team bowed out of the championship race to Wexford.
While Evans has wide experience both as a coach and manager, having managed at the top level with Roscommon, Meath and Tipperary, while also having been a member of the Tipperary All-Ireland winning minor football backroom team there seems to be a growing unrest at the lack of success of any real substance.
With his wide experience at club level in Kerry with Kerins O’Rahilluys, Laune Rangers and Fossa, he looked the ideal fit for the Garden County.
However, there is no doubt there is disappointment in the county at the lack of progress, with many players clearly disillusioned at the moment, while Wicklow County Board’s failure to make a clear statement on Evans’ future only adds to the confusion that exists.
‘I have met with the County Board. We had a full review of the season taking in all aspects of football in the county,’ said Evans on Tuesday.
‘The whole situation has been asssessed with the review. That is where it is at the moment,’ he added.
On his own future, Evans was non-committal: ‘I have an option of a third year. As of yet I have not taken that up. I will consider the matter once the review is complete. At this stage there’s no decision or definite line on my position. I have completed two years so it’s a case of wait and see at the moment.’
