Two Wicklow stars battle it out on the national stage
TWO Co. Wicklow soccer players battled on the big stage last weekend when Shelbourne and Wexford Youths clashed in the Só Hotels Women’s National League Cup final in Ferrycarrig Park.
Bray’s Alannah McEvoy togged out for her Shelbourne side while Carnew’s Edel Kennedy manned a midfield berth for the Wexford Youths outfit.
There were no goals by halftime in this entertaining encounter but Bray’s McEvoy came close shortly after the restart but her effort was saved by Wexford Youths keeper Maeve Williams.
Despite being on top for much of the second period without creating much, Edel Kennedy’s side fell behind to a 73rd minute strike from Shelbourne’s Emily Whelan in what would be the only goal of the day.
Carnew’s Kennedy volleyed over from the edge of the area with 13 minutes left and had a half chance in the 89th minute that ultimately came to nothing after a decent showing from her.
And so it was joy for Bray native Alannah McEvoy when World Cup lineswoman Michelle O’Neill sounded the final whistle as Shelbourne inflicted a second defeat on the Wexford Youths side having already beaten them in May in the league.
Both sides will meet again this Saturday evening at the same venue where anything but a win for Kennedy’s Youths will the final nail to the defence of their Só Hotels Women’s National Football League crown. Kick-off is at 6.30pm.
