Post office staff move will delay work further
VITAL UPGRADES at the Arklow Post Office to make the building accessible to all could be delayed even further, according to a town councillor, if a temporary premises has to be sourced tohouse staff while works are ongoing. Speaking to The Wicklow People this week Cllr. Miriam Murphy who has lobbied on the issue for many years with Arklow Disability Action Group voiced concerns that the works will not get underway as soon as promised.
‘I was informed this week that the sorting staff will soon be moved to Emoclew Road as expected and that those negotiations are drawing to a close.
‘However, upon speaking to An Post I got the impression they are considering moving the remaining staff out of the Main Street branch altogether while the works are carried out and this could take months and months,’ she explained. Cllr. Murphy added that Arklow has been waiting for far too long for this work to commence which has already received planning approval. ‘We were informed that the sorting office move was the only thing holding the process up and now there is a chance that a whole other premises will have to be used. It’s just crazy.Iam calling on the people of Arklow to come out and support the issue. ‘They need to write to An Post and highlight the importance of getting this done as soon as possible,’ she said. Communications Manager at An Post Angus Laverty told The Wicklow People that a move to another site has not been confirmed. ‘We may well need to go to an alternative site but this has not been decided at this stage. It has taken longer than we hoped to get the upgrades done but our aim is to have them completed as quickly as possible,’ he said.
