Coolboy girls will play in Edinburgh
THE Coolboy Rangers Under 14s girls’ team will become the first Irish team to take part in the Edinburgh Cup international youth football festival over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
The eleven-strong team from Coolafancy will depart on Friday, August 2 on a five-day trip accompanied by coaches Philip Hamilton, Chelsie Nolan and five parents.
The Edinburgh Cup celebrates youth football clubs from Scotland, the United Kingdom and beyond. It will take place at Peffermill Playing Fields, Edinburgh from Friday, August 2, to Sunday, August 4. Preparations for the journey started last February with parents and the girls fundraising to cover the costs of attending the festival.
The girls have a packed schedule over their five-day trip. It starts on Saturday, August 3, with friendly matches against local opposition as a warm-up. On Sunday, August 4, they will compete in seven matches at the Edinburgh Cup.
The trip also includes an opportunity to do some sightseeing around Edinburgh city on Monday, August 5 when the team will visit the old town and Edinburgh Castle. The girls will also visit the grounds of Hibernia Football Club on Easter Road for a tour of the stadium and a training session with the Scottish club’s coaches.
‘The girls are bubbling. They can’t wait for the trip,’ said Coolboy girls head coach and club development officer Philip Hamilton. ‘They’ve done a huge amount of work for this between training and fundraising. It’s a lot to take in. We’ve had great support from parents and not just for fundraising.’
A farewell evening was held in Murphy’s Hotel, Tinahely yesterday (Tuesday, July 30) to thank supporters and sponsors.
If any girls are interested in playing football, parents can call Philip Hamilton on 087 23461621 for more information about Coolboy Rangers or the Wicklow Girls League.
