Swim­ming ban is lifted at Wick­low Har­bour

A PRO­HI­BI­TION no­tice on bathing in Wick­low Har­bour was lifted af­ter be­ing in place for five days.

The ban on bathing and swim­ming was put in place on Fri­day, July 19, af­ter con­sul­ta­tions be­tween Wick­low County Coun­cil when samples were taken from Wick­low Har­bour and the Leitrim River fol­low­ing an in­ci­dent of a sewage storm over­flow to the river from the pub­lic sewer that co­in­cided with heavy rain­fall.

Wick­low Swim­ming Club races due to take place on the Sun­day had to be post­poned be­cause the ban was still in place.

The HSE ad­vised that the pro­hi­bi­tion no­tice should re­main in place and rec­om­mended fur­ther sam­pling of the bathing wa­ter which took place on Mon­day, July 22.

Wa­ter sam­ple re­sults came back on Wed­nes­day, July 24, show­ing clean wa­ter qual­ity at the har­bour and the area was deemed safe to swim in. The pro­hi­bi­tion no­tice was also lifted in time to al­low Wick­low Swim­ming Club hold their Wed­nes­day evening races.
