Swimming ban is lifted at Wicklow Harbour
A PROHIBITION notice on bathing in Wicklow Harbour was lifted after being in place for five days.
The ban on bathing and swimming was put in place on Friday, July 19, after consultations between Wicklow County Council when samples were taken from Wicklow Harbour and the Leitrim River following an incident of a sewage storm overflow to the river from the public sewer that coincided with heavy rainfall.
Wicklow Swimming Club races due to take place on the Sunday had to be postponed because the ban was still in place.
The HSE advised that the prohibition notice should remain in place and recommended further sampling of the bathing water which took place on Monday, July 22.
Water sample results came back on Wednesday, July 24, showing clean water quality at the harbour and the area was deemed safe to swim in. The prohibition notice was also lifted in time to allow Wicklow Swimming Club hold their Wednesday evening races.
