MAIDEN

Maiden is the in­spi­ra­tional story of Tracy Ed­wards, a 24-year-old cook on char­ter boats, who be­came the skip­per of the first ever all-fe­male crew to en­ter the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989. This movie out­lines how Tracy’s dream was op­posed on all sides but she re­fused to give up. The screen­ing be­gins at 8 p.m. in the Mer­maid Arts Cen­tre and tick­ets, cost­ing €8/€6.50, are avail­able from the Mer­maid.

FIRE­WORKS

Be wowed by a stun­ning fire­works dis­play from 11 p.m. as it lights up the sky and brings the cur­tain down on the Au­gust bank hol­i­day in Bray.

Back to the Fu­ture will be screened at Bray Band­stand (run­ning time one hour 56 min­utes). Events are free and do not re­quire tick­ets. RATH­DRUM FIRE­WORKS

Rath­drum De­vel­op­ment As­so­ci­a­tion has ar­ranged a night of fun for its an­nual free, fire­works dis­play. There will be mu­sic in Mar­ket Square from 9 p.m., with the fire­works in Par­nell Me­mo­rial Park af­ter 10 p.m.

A ben­e­fit night will be held in the Ark­low Bay Ho­tel with pro­ceeds go­ing to the lo­cal branch of the Alzheimer’s So­ci­ety. Ad­mis­sion is €10.

LIFEBOAT BINGO

As part of the RNLI Ark­low Maritime Fes­ti­val, Lifeboat Bingo will be held in Arus Lor­cain, Ark­low from 8.30 p.m.

HOL­LY­WOOD FAIR

Bishop Eamonn Walsh will con­cel­e­brate an old-style Latin Mass in St. Kevin’s Church at 6 p.m. along with lo­cal clergy. Dressed in pre-1950s at­tire, the large at­ten­dance usu­ally make their way by pony and trap, vin­tage ve­hi­cles, bikes and shank’s mare. Af­ter Mass an­other slow-bi­cy­cle race is planned which will be fol­lowed by a dra­matic re-en­act­ment in an ad­ja­cent field.

SUN­DAY, AU­GUST 11

SUM­MER CON­CERT

The lat­est Sum­mer Sun­days free con­cert at Bray Band­stand be­gins at 2.30 p.m. will fea­ture Dublin Air­port Po­lice and Fire Band.

HOL­LY­WOOD FAIR

There will be ex­hi­bi­tions of tra­di­tional crafts such as black­smithing, stone­cut­ting, wood-turn­ing and but­ter mak­ing. Hand­i­crafts which will be dis­played and demon­strated in­clude spin­ning, knit­ting and sewing. Among the items set for dis­play at the fair are vin­tage cars and farm ma­chin­ery. Also present will be renowned Lis­doon­va­rna Match-Maker Wil­lie Daly. The snnual Sheep Show Com­pe­ti­tion al­ways at­tracts in­tense lo­cal in­ter­est. The en­trance fee is just €5, with chil­dren un­der-12 free.

CLAS­SIC CAR RUN

The tenth an­nual Balt­in­glass Clas­sic Car and Mo­tor­cy­cle Run takes place at 2 p.m. The event is hosted by West Wick­low Clas­sic and Vin­tage Ve­hi­cle Club and will fea­ture prizes for best clas­sic car, best mo­tor­cy­cle, best 4x4 and fur­thest trav­elled as well as the Ka­tri­ona Deevy Me­morar­ial Cup for Clubs. Reg­is­tra­tion takes place from 11.30 a.m. and en­try costs €20.

MON­DAY, AU­GUST 12

THE SIS­TERS BROTH­ERS

Based on the novel by Patrick de­Witt, this movie tells the story of Char­lie and Eli Sis­ters. Char­lie, the younger brother, was born to kill but Eli dreams of liv­ing a nor­mal life. Hired to find and kill a man, a ruth­less hunt be­gins and an ini­tia­tory jour­ney that will test the bond be­tween broth­ers. This screen­ing at the Mer­maid be­gins at 8 p.m. and tick­ets cost €8/€6.50.

THURS­DAY, AU­GUST 15

DARTS FUNDRAISER

A fundrais­ing darts night will take place in the Wood­pecker, Ash­ford, from 7 p.m. to help cover the costs of Jamie and Sean Cum­mins trav­el­ling to Gi­bral­ter to rep­re­sent Ire­land in the JDC World Cup of Darts. PDC World Cup run­ner-up Steve Len­non will be present on the night and there will be a raf­fle held.

SATUR­DAY, AU­GUST 17

RUN THE RIDGE

Those brave enough to ‘Run the Ridge’ face a choice be­tween a 20km mixed moun­tain and train run, a 10km trail run and a ju­nior race. The race, which is a fundraiser for Laragh GAA Club and or­gan­ised in con­junc­tion with Glen­dalough Ath­let­ics Club, will see the 20k run­ners tackle the Der­ry­bawn Ridge while the 10k run­ners will head through Der­ry­bawn Woods. Both events start and fin­ish at Laragh GAA grounds, where a prize-giv­ing will also be held. En­try to the 20k, which be­gins at 12.30 p.m., is €25 while en­try to the 10k, which starts at 1 p.m., is €20.

SUM­MER PARTY

The cam­paign­ers for the com­mu­nity pool for west Wick­low will be cel­e­brat­ing the cam­paign’s first birth­day will a party in the hip­po­drome at Russ­bor­ough House from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. This is a free, fam­ily event and will have mu­sic, danc­ing, games, bal­loons, face-paint­ing and, of course, cake.

JADE’S GLITTER BALL

This spe­cial ball takes place at 7 p.m. in the Park View Ho­tel, New­town­moun­tkennedy, to help raise funds for young Grey­stones woman Jade McCann. Jade is bat­tling an in­cur­able stage four pecoma can­cer and all funds raised will go to her treat­ment, trans­port and any other sup­port ser­vices. Tick­ets cost €30 and avail­able by call­ing 086 4051645 or 087 9434959. The evening will in­clude a pros­ecco re­cep­tion, live mu­sic, DJ, fin­ger food, a raf­fle and more.
