Party to mark first an­niver­sary

THE cam­paign for a Com­mu­nity Pool for West Wick­low is one year old and a party will take place in the Hip­po­drome at Russ­bor­ough House to cel­e­brate the an­niver­sary.

The Balt­in­glass Mu­nic­i­pal Dis­trict is the only Mu­nic­i­pal Dis­trict in County Wick­low with­out a coun­cil owned or op­er­ated swim­ming pool. It in­cludes a pop­u­la­tion of ap­prox­i­mately 26,000, ac­cord­ing to the 2016 Cen­sus, reach­ing from Manor Kil­bride to Carnew.

‘This is a free fam­ily fun day to cel­e­brate a suc­cess­ful year of the cam­paign to secure a swim­ming pool for West Wick­low. The com­mu­nity in West Wick­low have been over­whelm­ingly sup­port­ive of this grass roots cam­paign since it started in July 2018 and this is our way of say­ing thank you,’ said Deirdre McCor­mack of the cam­paign group Com­mu­nity Swim­ming Pool for West Wick­low.

The cel­e­bra­tion takes place on Satur­day, Au­gust 17, at the Hip­po­drome at Russ­bor­ough House from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. There will be games with Wick­low Lo­cal Sports Part­ner­ship, safety tips by Wa­ter Safety Ire­land, Danc­ing with the Ruth Shine School of Dance, dancer­cise with Katie Charles, face paint­ing and mu­sic with East Coast FM, free ac­cess to Russ­bor­ough’s fa­mous Maze from 3pm to 4pm and a visit from some of the feath­ered in­hab­i­tants of the Na­tional Bird of Prey Cen­tre.

Health Min­is­ter Si­mon Har­ris is also due to at­tend.

As part of the cam­paign Wick­low County Coun­cil agreed to com­mis­sion a fea­si­bil­ity study to in­ves­ti­gate the vi­a­bil­ity of a lo­cal swim­ming pool in West Wick­low. On the back of the fea­si­bil­ity study, the Coun­cil ap­plied for Stream 1 fund­ing from the Large Scale Sport Infrastruc­ture Fund.
