LAST Friday, the third round clash of Coolkenno and Laragh in Group 1 of the Darcy Sand Intermediate Football Championship was played in Arklow where a very experienced Coolkenno were playing a younger but hopeful Laragh side.
The Coolkenno men hit the opening score of the game with a free from full-forward Don Jackman but Laragh responded well with a fine score from their own number 14, Mark Miley, who fired over a great score on the turn.
Stevie Cushe’s side then started to pull away on the scoreboard, hitting 1-3 without reply; the goal coming from the evergreen Jackman who managed to get his fist onto a long ball that was fired in around the danger area.
Coolkenno’s inside forward line were now started to get their hands on the ball more frequently, with both corner-forwards hitting points from play, the first coming from Conor Walker before Pauric Coleman got his name on the score sheet, Coleman then added another 45 seconds later.
Laragh responded with a solitary point from play through wing forward David Miley.
Then a huge turning point arrived when an off-the-ball incident resulted in Laragh midfielder Damien Hanlon getting a second yellow card.
With a numerical advantage Coolkenno started to open up their lead very significantly, hitting seven points without any response heading towards the break.
Wing forward Eamonn Rossiter scored from play, midfielder Jim Cushe then broke up the field and fired over a great score from an acute angle. Wing back Patrick Dalton made his way up the field and slotted the ball over the bar before Jackman fired over from play before adding another from a free while Conor Walker and midfielder Conor Doyle put over points from play just before the Photos: Paul Messitt
With the game been virtually over as a contest, that man Jackman got another goal after some good work from his teammates who managed to lay the ball on a plate to him in front of the Laragh goal.
Coolkenno kept the scoreboard ticking over in the second half with Rossiter firing over a point before substitute Keith Farrell fired over the black spot.
The aforementioned Cushe and Coleman hit Coolkenno’s last two points of the game.
Laragh then decided to try put some respectability on the scoreboard which they did, mainly though the boot of centre forward John Nolan who dissected the posts five times in a row, with three of these coming from frees, the other one coming from play.
