THE Wicklow ladies brought the curtain down on a particularly disappointing season by suffering relegation back to Junior ranks following a 6-12 to 3-14 defeat to Leitrim in Kinnegad last Sunday in the All-Ireland Intermediate relegation play-off.

It brings to a close a difficult season for manager James Kelly in his first year in charge and sends the Wicklow women down to the Junior ranks from there they escaped thanks to that memorable victory over New York in Croke Park back in 2011.

Wicklow were in the relegation dogfight as they scored fewer points (scores over the bar) in their draw with Longford in the group stages, while Leitrim finished bottom of their group, losing out to Roscommon and Offaly.

Leitrim enjoyed an electric start to the game with 2-2 in the bag after 11 minutes.

They led by 4-7 to 0-6 at the break and opened up a 5-10 to 1-7 lead at the end of the third quarter.

However, credit to Wicklow, they battled back with everything they had and went on to score 2-7 in the last 15 minutes but Leitrim bagged a total of 6-12 and they survived.

A team from Wicklow Rugby Club are pictured at half-time at an Aviva Minis Exhibition game during Ireland v Italy game on Saturday last.
