O’TOOLE WORK ‘BEST IN SHOW’
ARTIST Laurence O’Toole was the winner of the Signal Arts Centre ‘Best In Show’ prize for the gallery’s 7th annual open exhibition.
The exhibition opened on Tuesday, August 6 and will continue until Sunday, August 18. The winner was announced at the opening reception last Friday evening. The artist was presented with a prize of €1,000 for the piece ‘Enjoy Yourself, It’s Later Than You Think’. Artist Emer O’Boyle was the judge of this year’s competition. She is the co-founding director of UCD Parity Studios, a university wide artists in residence programme. Emer’s first break following her graduation from NCAD in 2006, was the Signal Arts Centre, Artist in Community residency, in collaboration with Little Bray Family Resource Centre and St. Fergal’s Resource Centre. O’Toole’s piece was one of 12 shortlisted by the evening of the reception. Three of his paintings were in the list of the final 12.
A founding tenet of Signal Arts Centre is the belief that there is a huge amount of talent that goes unrecognised and that an opportunity should be there for all artists to exhibit their work. The Signal Open Exhibition is now in its 7th year and has become an annual event in artists’ calendars.
