Musicians hit all the right notes
THERE was plenty of success for Wicklow at the 2019 Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann held over eight days in Drogheda.
Over 500,000 people thronged the streets of the Co Louth town, while tens of thousands of people attended the special opening by President Michael D Higgins.
It was a particularly memorable occasion for James Lambert, a member of the Wicklow Miners CCÉ. He won the whistle competition and finished second in the button accordion in his age group.
Matthew Hurrell O’Connor of Bray CCÉ also returned home to the Garden County a winner after finishing first in the bodhrán competition for 15 to 18 year olds.
There were three further second place finishes for Bhré CCÉ members. Betty Ní Shé was runner-up in the whistle slow airs competition for 12 to 15 year olds, Elena Ó’Céidigh-Hayes was second in the Comhrá Gaeilge for 15 to 18 year olds and Éabha Ó Céidigh Hayes was second in Scéalaíocht for 15 to 18 year olds.
