Mu­si­cians hit all the right notes

THERE was plenty of suc­cess for Wick­low at the 2019 Fleadh Cheoil na hÉire­ann held over eight days in Drogheda.

Over 500,000 peo­ple thronged the streets of the Co Louth town, while tens of thou­sands of peo­ple at­tended the spe­cial open­ing by Pres­i­dent Michael D Higgins.

It was a par­tic­u­larly mem­o­rable oc­ca­sion for James Lambert, a mem­ber of the Wick­low Min­ers CCÉ. He won the whis­tle com­pe­ti­tion and fin­ished sec­ond in the but­ton ac­cor­dion in his age group.

Matthew Hur­rell O’Con­nor of Bray CCÉ also re­turned home to the Garden County a win­ner af­ter fin­ish­ing first in the bodhrán com­pe­ti­tion for 15 to 18 year olds.

There were three fur­ther sec­ond place fin­ishes for Bhré CCÉ mem­bers. Betty Ní Shé was run­ner-up in the whis­tle slow airs com­pe­ti­tion for 12 to 15 year olds, Elena Ó’Céidigh-Hayes was sec­ond in the Comhrá Gaeilge for 15 to 18 year olds and Éabha Ó Céidigh Hayes was sec­ond in Scéalaíoch­t for 15 to 18 year olds.

Matthew Hur­rell O’Con­nor came first in the bodhrán com­pe­ti­tion for 15 to 18 year olds.
