West Wicklow ignored in plan

DIRECTIVE AGAINST INCLUSION IN REGIONAL SPATIAL PLAN

Wicklow People (West Edition) - - FRONT PAGE - By MYLES BUCHANAN

A DIRECTIVE issued by the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government calls for the removal of plans to link the Luas to Blessington from the Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy 2019-2031.

The upgrade of the N81 and the link from Tallaght to Hollywood with the M9 wasn’t included in the draft. Former TD Billy Timmins is urging the public to lodge submissions outlining how west Wicklow has been ignored.

He said: ‘It’s very regrettable that the N81 and the corridor from Tallaght to Blessington wasn’t included in the RSES draft. Unfortunately it didn’t get support across all political parties. The one consolation was the fact that the proposal to link the Luas line to Blessington was included. Now the Minister’s direction aims to exclude that as well. It’s a great pity that out of all the corridors out of Dublin, the one going to west Wicklow is the one ignored.’

A DIRECTIVE issued by the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government aims to remove plans to extend the Luas to Blessington from the Eastern and Midland Regional Assembly Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy 2019 - 2031.

The draft report was drafted in May and was sent to Minister Eoghan Murphy for approval. The draft included plans for the appraisal, planning and design of Luas network expansion to Blessington, as well as Bray, Finglas, Lucan, Poolbeg, Hazelhatch and Booterstown.

The Minister has directed that reference to Blessington, Hazelhatch and Booterstown should be removed from the plan, claiming that the assembly ignored or didn’t take sufficient account of a submission he made in January and April. He further states that the RSES is not in compliance with certain sections of the Planning and Development Act 2000.

The direction comes as a further blow for west Wicklow. The upgrade of the N81 and the link from Tallaght to Hollywood with the M9 wasn’t included in the draft after the motion lost out by a single vote at the Eastland and Midland Regional Assembly back in May.

Former TD Billy Timmins has asked the public to lodge submissions supporting the inclusion of the N81, the Tallaght to Hollywood link and the appraisal plans to extend Luas services to Blessington.

‘It’s very regrettable that the N81 and the corridor from Tallaght to Blessington wasn’t included in the RSES draft. Unfortunately it didn’t get support across all political parties. The one consolation was the fact that the proposal to link the Luas line to Blessington was included. Now the Minister’s direction aims to exclude that as well. It’s a great pity that out of all the corridors out of the greater Dublin area, the one going to west Wicklow is the one being ignored,’ said Mr Timmins.

Submissions can be made in writing up until Monday, September 2. ‘I would call on as many people as possible to make submissions. People living in the area, statutory bodies and Baltinglass Municipal District should make submissions on the matter outlining how this area has bee ignored,’ said Mr Timmins.
