Sadness at passing of Rev Dónal Berney
THERE was sadness over the weekend as news broke of the untimely passing of Rev Dónal Berney at just 61 years of age. A popular figure among the church-going community, one of the Co Wexford’s native’s final posts was as curate in Crossbridge.
Monaseed man Fr Berney was ordained in Craanford on June 19, 1982, and went on to do his higher diploma in Maynooth. He served in St Peter’s College from 1983 to 1988 before becoming curate in Mountmellick, a role he held until September 1995.
From there it was back to Wexford and, after serving for a short stint in Ballymurn, he made the move to Curracloe/ Screen parish in December of 1995, a place he would stay for 13 years. During this time, he made some great friends in the area and was extremely highly thought of among his parishioners. It was while in Curracloe he celebrated his silver jubilee and it was a great cause of celebration amongst the local community.
In August 2009, Fr Berney made the move across the border to Wicklow, where he served as curate in Crossbridge for five years. This lasted until August 2013 when he was made parish priest of Kilanerin/Ballyfad in what was to be his last role before his retirement in December 2016.
Fr Berney passed away peacefully on Saturday, surrounded by his loving family, at Blackrock Clinic after a long illness, bravely borne.
Tributes poured in for Fr Berney on social media as people fondly recalled a man devoted to his vocation and the service of his parishioners.
Fr Berney was pre-deceased by his parents, Pat and Mary. He is sadly missed by his sisters Breda and Bernie, brothers Jimmy, Mattie and Pat, sistersin-law, brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and a wide circle of friends.
His funeral Mass takes place at noon today (Wednesday, August 28) at St Patrick’s Church, Monaseed, followed by burial in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Monaseed.
