WICKLOW County Council has announced the signing of contracts for the long-awaited N81 Knockroe Bend Realignment Scheme.

The works will see the upgrading of the N81 at Knockroe Bend over approximately 1 kilometre of road. It is expected that the project will make this section of the N81, which has been the site of many collisions, much safer for road users.

Commenting on the announcement, Baltinglass Municipal District Councillor Patsy Glennon said, ‘this is something which we in Hollywood have been hearing about for generations and now it’s at last about to happen. The dangerous bend at Deering’s old shop in Knockroe on N81 is to be bypassed at last. The contract is now signed to have the work carried out.’

The works on this stretch of the N81 are intended to improve road safety and reduce the occurrence of collisions by realigning and widening the road at this location.

THE long-awaited N81 Knockroe Bend Realignment Scheme moved a step closer this week with the signing of contracts for the project.

The scheme will see the upgrading of the N81 at Knockroe Bend over approximately 1 kilometre of road. It is expected that the works will make this section of the N81 much safer for road users.

The Knockroe bend is located around 800m south of Hollywood Cross and 11 km south of Blessington. The bend has been the scene of numerous collisions. Contracts for the works were signed by Wicklow County Council and Clonmel Enterprises on Monday.

Cathaoirleach of Baltinglass MD, Cllr Gerry O’Neill also welcomed the announcement that the contract has been signed. ‘I’m elated that the project has moved to this stage of works. It’s long overdue and will be great for the area.’

The works on this stretch of the N81 are intended to improve road standards, thereby improving the road safety performance of this section of the N81 and reduce the occurrence of collisions by realigning and widening the road at this location.

The main works contract is expected to take around 72 weeks to complete. The N81 Knockroe Bend scheme has been funded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland. In 2018, it was announced that €2.5 million had been allocated for the works by the national agency.
