Wicklow People (West Edition) - - NEWS - By BRENDAN KEANE

THERE were scenes of great excitement in New town mound kennedy last week as pupils attending the new Educate Together primary school created their own bit of history.

The school opened in a temporary location opposite the towns community centre in Kilmacullagh, New town mount kennedy, on Thursday.

With nine pupils enrolled on its books at the moment and with Principal, Dr Nicola Martin-Hodgins, taking on a teaching-principal role the school can offer a high level of education to its pupils.

Speaking to this newspaper Ms Martin-Hodgins said she is very excited about the prospects for the school and its potential to grow over the coming years.

Initially, she will be joined by staff member Eithne Kennedy and said it’s exciting to be part of a first-time school setup.

With a comprehensive background in teaching Ms Martin-Hodgins said she is looking forward to helping the children develop in a stimulating environment.

She also praised the parents for being very supportive and also members of the local community including the management and staff in the local community centre.

‘We service all around Wicklow and it’s a very exciting time,’ Ms Martin-Hodgins said.

‘We are starting small on a temporary site but we will be planning on growing the school over the coming years and I have no doubt that it will grow,’ she added.

‘I feel very fortunate to be in this situation as a principal.’

She said the long term plan is to acquire a site to develop a permanent school building and opening the school is a first step on the road to that objective.

‘I feel you have to look at solutions to challenges that come up and it wasn’t easy to get this school set up for opening day but we got there and the future is very promising,’ she said.

The school opens at 8.35 a.m. and the work begins at 8.45 a,m.

She said the school fully embraces the educate together ethos which is based around empowering democratically run, equality based, co-educational, child centred education.
