Lambert stars for Aughrim
Granite City men through
AUGHRIM powered their way to the Junior ‘B’ hurling decider with this thumping of Éire Óg Greystones in Aughrim last Sunday afternoon.
Driven by the Lambert brothers, Robert and Conor, and boosted by the skill and accuracy of Conor Connolly and the toughness of the likes of Ciaran Byrne, Shane McAllister, Brian Hanlon and Max Molloy up the spine of the team, Liam Keenan Snr’s side never once looked like losing this game and will take stopping when they face Arklow Rocks in the decider.
The damage was done by the Aughrim men in the first half when they romped out to a 1-13 to 0-3 lead over the Greystones men with Robert Lambert in particular looking like he was simply too good for this level at times; his experience with Carnew Emmets Senior team obviously standing him in good stead.
Éire Óg’s Cillian Foley got things up and running from a free but they were soon to find themselves under severe pressure all over the field. Robert Lambert and Mark Clancy had points before a speculative shot from Robert Lambert flew in past Martin Byrne and an Éire Óg defender when it should have been stopped.
Pat Egan replied for Éire Óg but from here on in it was the Aughrim show with five points from the excellent Conor Connolly (three frees), four stunners from Robert Lambert and singles from Jack Murray and full-forward Max Molloy to open up a virtually unassailable lead at the break.
Éire Óg were battling hard despite being under the kosh for the most part with Ger Whyte certainly making himself known from centre back.
Aughrim’s second goal after five minutes of the second half was the final nail and Liam Keenan Snr’s men drove on relentlessly with another goal from Molloy and two points from Connolly and one from Robert Lambert at the death.
Really impressive stuff from Aughrim. Some of the hurling in this game could be described as agricultural but there were plenty of very entertaining phases and really impressive stick work here and there.
Scorers – Aughrim: Robert Lambert 1-6, Conor Connolly 0-7 (4f), Max Molloy 2-1, Mark Clancy 0-1, Jack Murray 0-1.
Éire Óg Greystones: Pat Egan 0-2 (1f), Ger Whyte 0-1, Niall Deeney 0-1, Cillian Foley 0-1 (f).
Aughrim’s Robert Lambert fires off a shot despite the attention of Éire Óg’s Ger Whyte.
Fancy footwork between Éire Óg’s James Nolan and Timahely’s Colm Kenny during the Junior ‘B’ hurling championship semi-final.
