Plans for a new 130-bed nursing home were announced at a public meeting held last week as part of Rathdrum’s bid to win an Enterprising Town Award.

Rathdrum has been chosen to represent County Wicklow in the Small (less than 2,000) population category of the Bank of Ireland National Enterprising Town Awards 2019. Seventy-five entries from 31 areas are all vying for the title of Ireland’s Most Enterprising Town.

Tuesday’s public meeting took place in Jacob’s Well and focused on the regeneration of Rathdrum.

Simon Webb of Mayo County Council was a guest speaker and spoke about his experience of regeneration with Westport in his role as an architect. Other speakers included John Webb O’Rourke of Zest Health Care and Deborah Megan of Coillte.

Guests heard that work on Rathdrum’s €3 million Primary Care Centre is due to kick off in the coming weeks and it was also announced that a planning application will soon be lodged seeking permission to construct a 130-bed nursing home on the same site, costing in the region of €10 million.

Ms Megan discussed the €8 million redevelopment of Avondale House and Forest Park to turn it into a state-of-the-art visitor destination.

‘The announcement of the nursing home plans was great news,’ said Cllr Pat Kennedy. ‘Market Square has been derelict for the past ten years but things are now coming into shape. There are lots of exciting ventures lined up for Rathdrum. The town should be well set for the visit of the judges on September 30.’
