Wicklow People (West Edition) - - SPORT -

With September now upon us, Rathdrum Rugby Club have outlined ambitious plans for the new 2019/20 season both on and off the pitch.

On the pitch: The men’s XV who currently play in the Dublin Metro league 4 are building from a very successful 2018/19. Looking back on last season, men’s captain Matthew Binions is extremely proud of Rathdrum men’s XV finishing fourth in a very competitive league.

‘It was one of continual building and hard work, we added numbers in every position of the team giving extra depth. Turn out for training was great throughout the season and we were rewarded by a solid finish. This speaks volumes for the comradery and culture we have built in Rathdrum and one we are very proud off,’ he said.

‘The coming season is very exciting for us with Neil Short and Morgan Sheridan, both ex-players taking on coaching roles and demonstrating the commitment to reinvest in the club. We are constantly looking to add to the club and welcome new players. Contact Matt on 086 321 6540. Training is every Wednesday and Friday at 7.30pm at the Ivy Grounds,’ he added.

The minis last year was very exciting for Rathdrum RFC. The year started with a passionate coaching team but despite being unsure of numbers, were blown away by the commitment of the young players and dedication of the parents.

Every Saturday morning at 10am, sun, rain or hail the numbers started strong initially and increased throughout the season. Rathdrum minis not only travelled to blitzes competing strongly, but also hosted them which was impossible for the club a few years back.

‘We would like to thank the parents for their enthusiasm and look forward to the new season. Training starts back on September 7 at 10am at the Ivy Grounds. New members are always welcome, so if you’re thinking if rugby is right for your kids or are looking for a committed club please come down and meet us at training. Contact Morgan on 087 755 7458,’ said a club spokesperson.

The Rathdrum women’s team spent last season building in strength and commitment and are really looking forward to the 2019/20 season. The Drumettes train every Wednesday and Friday at 7pm at the Ivy Leaf grounds.

Are you new to rugby or just want to try it out? Perfect! Get along and meet a committed and involving team. No experience is needed as we will provide all the coaching and back up you need. Women’s coach Lisa and captain Sue are both excited about what the new season will bring. This year we have added to the coaching staff and have a core of committed players really excited about the season ahead of us. Contact Sharon on 087 291 0317

Off the pitch Rathdrum RFC are looking to develop the facilities at the Ivy Leaf grounds. Rathdrum is well served with two pitches and a fantastic club house, however, the club are constantly looking forward and this year we are adding flood lights to enhance training and also enable the club to host games under lights. This is a statement of intent as we look to the future to grow and reinvest in the current players and future generations.

For the 2020/21 season both pitches will be resurfaced and finished to improve playability. It is very exciting times for the club. Rathdrum are currently fundraising for this via our GoFund me page and welcome donations and sponsorship as we build for the future.

Please visit them on Facebook at Rathdrum Rugby Club, instragram @Rathrumrfc or at pitch side where all are welcome.
