Championship dreams die despite Aughrim win

Wicklow People (West Edition) - - SPORT - MARTIN O’BRIEN at Ballinakill

THIS game was slow to get going in Ballinakill, but in no way was this down to the teams out on the field. In fact, two minutes after throw in the lights on the pitch began to fail. A small conference ensued on the field, the teams headed for the dressing room and we resumed 20 minutes later.

On resumption, Hollywood would take the lead in the second minute through full-forward James Mooney and followed by a Thomas Kelly point. Aughrim responded in kind with three pointed frees from wing back Conor Phelan. The game was tight with Phelan and Kelly trading points again.

The 20th minute of the first half was a pivotal moment, as Patrick Phelan latched on to a ball tapped down by Richard Keegan. Phelan took on his man and buried the ball to the net. This was followed by a red card for Hollywood midfielderiara Maguire and a point for Aughrim for Andrew Holt. Thomas Kelly responded, and the score was 1-5 to 0-5 to the Granite City men.

The second half began with Aughrim on the front foot. Conor Lambert, Andrew Holt and Conor Phelan with four fine scores. Wing back, Phelan having a fine day from placed balls. Hollywood responded with three points from Thomas Kelly, who had a great game for the west men.

In a carbon copy of the first half, Hollywood turned the tables. They bagged a goal from a long ball in to Kealan Burke who fisted to the net. One minute later, Aughrim were reduced to 14 men with Andrew Holt receiving his marching orders. The score line read 1-9 to 1-7 with 10 minutes on the clock.

The final 10 were not as eventful as the previous 50, with Aughrim chipping two more points from Adam Rochford and Conor Phelan again. Ross Tyrrell chipped over a score for Hollywood, only to receive his second yellow shortly after.

The game finished with Aughrim pushing for another goal to seal the win. At the final whistle, it is fair to say Aughrim were the deserved winners on the night where both teams crash out of the championship.
