Goose bankers too strong for Valleymount
KILCOOLE marched into the semi-finals of the Arklow Bay Junior C Football Championship following this impressive win over Valleymount in ideal conditions in Ballinakill last Thursday evening.
But, having said that, if Valleymount were a bit more clinical in front of the posts with their shooting, we could have had a closer game here.
Pat Woods was the star of the show, landing three majors for Kilcoole as the Valleymount side were left to rue a host of missed oppurtunities in the opening half, while Breon Nugent and Amby Miley put in strong performances well for the west side.
Wing back Charlie Maguire opened the scoring with a point after great play by Eoin O’Brien to get the East Coast side up and running. Dave Miley curled over a long-range point off the righthand side to get the westerners on the board a minute later.
Chris Farrell and the afore mentioned Eoin O’Brien rebuilt the lead with a point apiece as Kilcoole were making better use of their possession.
Valleymount could not find the target, tagging on a trio of wides. Eoin O’Brien and Conor Scullion punished the west side by firing over a couple of points.
Breon Nugent was working hard in the Valleymount defence, breaking down plenty of good work by the Goosebank side.
Pat Woods was a constant thorn in the Valleymount rearguard, all evening.
Conor Harpur drew two great saves from the boot of Woods in the next period. Valleymount forwards could not settle into the game with their shooting.
Shane Hughes finally registered a point from a free after Amby Miley was fouled going through.
Dave Miley should have raised a green flag for Valleymount, but Luke Doyle was up to the task and saved well.
Barry Doyle landed Kilcoole’s seventh point after a great passage of play started by Kevin Condron.
Possession and chances were about 50/50 for both sides, but Valleymount could not buy a score by any account, as another four wides were registered.
Pat Woods closed out the scoring with a point, as the half-time whistle sounded, with the score reading 0-8 to 0-2 at the break.
Barry Doyle pointed on the restart for Kilcoole, however Valleymount found a bit of momentum and rattled of four points without reply, to cut the deficit down to three, with scores from the industrious Amby Miley, and a point each from Shay Geoghegan and Dave Miley.
However in the closing quarter any comeback by Valleymount was effectively put to bed by a dominant Kilcoole side, with a brace of goals from the in-form Pat Woods.
Conor Scullion should have raised another green flag in the next attack but pulled his effort over the crossbar. Charlie Maguire and Eoin O’Brien also pointed before Pat Woods landed his third major of the evening.
Shane Hughes stopped the rot momentarily with a point for the red men.
Brian Deveraux pointed to close out the scoring, to put the Kilcoole club, into their second adult championship semi-final along with their Intermediate team so far this season.
