Plenty of footie played last weekend from Friday evening right up till Sunday morning. While we basked in lovely sunshine on Saturday, Sunday was a different story as it turned out to be a right miserable day.

The action started on Friday evening when the 13’s (kindly sponsored by Adrian Dunne Pharmacies) travelled to Ballyman to take on Enniskerry. To say our team was slow out of the blocks would be an understatement but they went 4-0 down before they started playing. Iggy Szpilka and a screamer from Paudie Gammell put the ‘13’s back in with a shout but unfortunately we were guilty of missing too many chances. Enniskerry finished the scoring in the dying minutes with a penalty kick to leave the score at 5-2 for the home side. On the evening Keira Farrelly, Aaron Cawley and Gammell were the pick of the Newtown players.

They then headed to Ashford on Sunday morning where they shared the points in a 10 goal thriller. It could have been all three but a bit of laziness and silly mistakes put paid to that. Max Synnott helped himself to a hat trick (one a peno) and Aaron Cawley scored twice and they along with Patrick Martin were the best players on the day.

Our under-eights put in a brave display away to a very strong Arklow United team where David and Alana Gray, Rian Martin and John Paul Dunleavy all played well.

Our under-nines edged out Ashford away with a top display where among those who starred were Aaron Nolan, David McCormack and Conor Shevlin.

Our under-10s were at home to Arklow Town White where they were plenty of goals as Arklow prevailed by a couple of goals. Goalscorers for Newtown were Leon O’Connor, Lucas Dowdall and JV McCullagh-Kelly.

Our under-11s had a deserved victory away to Arklow United Stars, winning 5-3. It was almost a repeat of last week’s game where we went ahead, the opposition pegged us back but on this occasion we went again to take the points. We were three up at half time thanks to two from Aidan Heffernan and a goal from Mikey Synnott and we were in total control. However, in the second half we got sloppy and let Arklow back into the game and they duly levelled the game, However, our team stepped it up and thanks to assists from Kacey Kelly and Daniel Eager, William Valentine notched two goals and we took all the points. On the day it was a good all round team display. Our 12’s had no game. Our ever popular Development Squad will return on Saturday, September 28 (10.11 a.m.) after the summer break. All boys and girls from five to seven years are very welcome to attend and can contact any coach or committee member for further information.

Also we had planned to host a Soccer Sisters programme for girls but with the long evenings starting to fade we may have to leave this till early in the new year. The Soccer Sisters programme consists of six free one hour training sessions with fully qualified and Garda vetted coaches from the club. All participants would also receive an FAI T-shirt if they participate in all six weeks. If there are any further developments on this programme we will let those interested know.

The following are the fixtures for the weekend Sat/Sunday, September 21/22: under-8s away to Avonmore FC ko to be confirmed; under-9s at home to St Anthony’s Yellow ko Sunday at 10.15 a.m.; under-10s at home to Roundwood FC ko Saturday at 10.15 a.m.; under-11s at home to Shillelagh Navy ko Saturday at 11.30 a.m.; under-12s at home to Enniskerry B ko Saturday at 12.45 p.m.; under-13s – Fixture to be confirmed (Fixtures and KO Times are subject to change)

Our ever popular fundraiser ‘Last Man Standing’ will soon get its first outing this season. The start date is the weekend of Saturday 28th-Monday30th Sept. The cost is €10 per head and all money raised go towards the youth of the area. If interested in participating please let any of our coaches and committee members know and they will put you in. The Prize Pot will be 50% of all money taken in up to a maximum of €500. Rules of the competition are available on request or are on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

We only have the one player from the club celebrating his birthday in the coming week and he is Brooklyn Doyle from the under-12s. Happy birthday Brooklyn from everyone at Newtown Juniors FC.
