Suspended term for motorist who didn’t help others
DANGEROUS DRIVING led to a suspended jail sentence and a two year disqualification for Jerry Wall from 75A Mountain View, Ballyguile, Wicklow Town.
The accident occurred on the M11 motorway at Toberduff on August 4 last year and resulted in injuries to all three people aboard the car which he rear-ended and pushed into the central barrier.
Considering the matter at Gorey District Court, Judge Bernadette Owens noted that Wall failed to render assistance to the casualties and left the scene.
She noted that the accused had previous convictions for hit and run and for motor insurance offences, though he presented himself to Gorey garda station several days after the accident.
The court also noted that two of the defendant’s children had significant health difficulties and it was accepted that he was fully insured on this occasion.
The judge reckoned that the offence merited a four month jail sentence, which was suspended, along with a two-year driving ban.
