Tinahely take over
AGB’s bright start fades as Reds cruise to county final
THE AGB girls began this ladies Minor football championship semi-final, played in Tinahely on Sunday last, in a confident, dominant manner.
They moved the ball swiftly, combining well as a team. Their forwards looked dangerous and Tinahely in these early minutes were at sixes and sevens. They were struggling to stay in the game and AGB were gradually building the scores.
Muireann O’Connor opened their scoring with a point and Lucie Kindal quickly added a goal. Centre forward Eve Rogers pointed a free and when she blasted home a goal it left the visitors ahead by 2-2 to nil by the ten-minute mark.
Tinahely had hardly been in their opponent’s half and it took twelve minutes for their first meaningful attack with Eimear O’Sullivan shooting a wide. Gradually the red and white brigade began to get going.
Aimee Maher and Aisling Winterbotham began to get parity in the midfield area while the half backs Jade Shannon, Dervla Byrne and Eimear Mutton were pushing forward in support.
Siofra Byrne and Eimear O’Brien began to get on more ball and gradually the game began to change. Tinahely had made two substitutions already in the game.
A goal from corner-forward Niamh Mutton seemed to give a great lift to the Tinahely girls who were now beginning to put on the pressure.
AGB centre-forward Eve Rogers steadied things for the Arklow girls with a fine point but back came the home side and full-forward Alice Mulhall netted a second goal following good approach play by Siofra Byrne.
Tinahely’s first point came after 20 minutes from Siofra Byrne but once again Eve Rogers tapped over an Arklow point from a free in reply. The score now stood at 2-4 to 2-1 but the momentum was swinging strongly to the Tinahely girls.
Eimear O’Brien pointed and when a shot for goal from Eimear O’Sullivan skidded to the net on the greasy sod, it put her side a point ahead. Eimear O’Brien quickly added three points in a row and midfielder Aimee Maher added another.
Eve Rogers scored an AGB point in response just on the call of half-time. Tinahely led by 3-6 to 2-5 in an extraordinary turnaround from the opening ten minutes.
Lucie Kendal reduced the gap to a goal in the opening minutes of the second half when she took a pass from free and added an AGB point.
However, the game was put beyond their reach before ten minutes had elapsed, by which time Tinahely had scored three goals in a row. First-half substitute Casey Byrne slotted home the first while half-time replacement Zoe Katus calmly converted two penalty kicks, one to each corner.
Despite the best efforts of Caoilfhinn Kavanagh, Emer Kelly, Eve Rogers, Grace Hurley and Luci Kendal the visitors began to fade from the game as Tinahely gradually took over.
Another half-time replacement Lacey Shannon added two more goals as she, Siofra Byrne and Eimear O’Brien formed a lethal half-forward line.
Siofra Byrne, Eimear O’Brien, Aimee Maher and Lacey Shannon got the Tinahely second-half points, but it was the goals that killed the game for the Arklow girls. They contested well for the second half but Tinahely ran out very comfortable winners on an 8-10 to 2-6 score line.
Scorers - Tinahely: Lacey Shannon 2-1, Zoe Katus 2-0, Eimear O’Brien 0-5, Casey Byrne 1-0, Niamh Mutton 1-0, Alice Mulhall 1-0, Eimear O’Sullivan 1-0, Siofra Byrne 0-2, Aimee Maher 0-2.
AGB: Eve Rogers 1-4, Lucie Kindal 1-1, Muireann O’Connor 0-1.
