Great start to 2019 as Carnew students win Junior title
COLÁISTE BHRÍDE 5-7 ST KEVIN’S CC 2-2
THE final of the 2018/’19 County Wicklow Post Primary Schools Junior ‘A’ camogie championship was held in Dunlavin on Monday between Coláiste Bhríde Carnew and ‘B’ champions St Kevin’s CC Dunlavin. The game was played in light rain, escaping the downpours that came later in the day.
The first half was very evenly contested. Katie Tyrrell opened the scoring with a long range goal for the Dunlavin school.
Coláiste Bhríde had points from Hannah Doyle and Abbie Walsh but also hit a number of wides under pressure from a resolute St Kevin’s defence. Dunlavin added an Emma Hayden goal and with only a few minutes left in the first half led by 2-1 to 0-4.
However, Hannah Doyle scored a good goal for the Carnew school and they added another very soon afterwards after a defensive lapse.
At half-time the score was Coláiste Bhríde 2-4, St Kevin’s 2-1.
The favourites Coláiste Bhríde dominated the second half with super sub Sarah Doyle starring.
Sarah scored 1-5 herself while Abbie Walsh and Hannah Doyle added goals.
St Kevin’s also had some dangerous attacks and went close on a number of occasions including hitting the crossbar but their only score in the half was a Katie Tyrrell point.
This was a fine all round display by a skilful Coláiste Bhríde team and they will look forward to a successful campaign in Leinster again this year. St Kevin’s also had a number of fine players but lacked the all round strength of their opponents.
After the game Jim Murphy presented the cup to the winning captain Emma Tompkins.
