Double joy as Reds see off Blessington in ‘A’ decider

Wicklow People (West Edition) - - SPORT -

A stunning first half and a controlled second saw Tinahely overcome a strong but limited Blessington challenge in the flagship U16 ‘A’ football championship final in Carnew last Saturday afternoon.

Causing ferocious damage in the first half, the Tinahely girls were almost out of sight at the break at 3-7 to 1-0 ahead.

Huge credit to the Blessington side for a massive effort in the second half but Tinahely’s class and composure showed as they withstood the onslaught and managed to counter strongly themselves with a further two majors and five points over the course of a very competitive second period.

Goals from Zoe Katus (2) and Laci Shannon were complimented by fine points from all angles for the Tinahely team in that opening half.

Blessington started their Senior pair of Anna Vasiljeva and Niamh Cullen in the full-forward line but were forced to reassess that situation as they struggled to gain a foothold in the game further out the field.

Niamh Kinsella acquitted herself well in the goals despite conceding five and she pulled off a fantastic save in the first half from Eimear O’Brien.

The Blues raised a green flag themselves in that opening 30, that from the boot of Sara Bohan.

Blessington came roaring back into the game from the start of the second half and had points from Sara Bohan (2) and a fine goal from Sadhbh Fisher and another Bohan point (free) momenst later to give themselves some genuine cause for optimism with plenty of time left to play.

However, Tinahely knuckled down and another rapid 2-2 finished the game as a contest. Blessington toiled relentlessly with Anna Vasiljeva and Niamh Cullen working tirelessly all over the field but there was very little they could do in the face of a very capable and impressive Tinahely performance on the day.
