A Baltinglass GAA Club delegate paid tribute to the selection committee who proposed Davy Burke as the new Wicklow Senior football manager at last Tuesday evening’s County Board meeting in Ballinakill.

‘Mr Chairman, I think we should complement the selection committee for the excellent work they have done. And they have to be further complimented for holding of the confidentiality of the process.

‘I know it appeared in yesterday morning’s paper, which was unfortunate, but they can’t do anything about that, and unfortunately it happened.

‘And they have made a good selection and I wish them all the best and please God he can turn things around in this county.

‘Well done, lads. I want to compliment everybody involved. It’s absolutely brilliant,’ he said.

Bray delegate Jackie Napier seconded the compliments to the selection committee.

‘In the past I was on committees like that myself and I know it’s not an easy job. I wish the new man all the best,’ he said.

Kiltegan’s Damien Byrne said that there appeared to be an ‘awful lot of negativity in the room tonight’ and that it was a ‘pity’ that it should be so.

‘It’s a pity with such a wonderful appointment,’ he said. ‘And I think that going out of here tonight there has to be positivity instead of negativity, and I think that whatever people have to say, throw it out now and move forward,’ he added.

The second Baltinglass delegate agreed with his club colleague’s complements of the selection committee and added that everyone needed to get behind him and that included the clubs.

‘The one thing I’d like to see in the county is for the good work that has been done over the last two years with Minors coming through – I have a young man at home myself at home involved this year and he was very lucky to be part of a really good set up. We have development squads working tirelessly behind the scenes and it’s not all doom and gloom. There’s a lot of savage work going on, lads, and if we all come together, we can bring us from where we are to a better place.

‘So, I’d like to see it in the minutes that our new manager comes in that there is a connect back into under-20s, Junior and back into Minor. Because that Minor team of last year and this year will be your under-20 team if there is going to be an under-20 championship and they’re the future of the county outside the lads we already have playing,’ he added.

Martin Fitzgerald called for all clubs and players to get behind Davy Burke and move forward.
