Dil­lon shines as Ama­zons run riot over Na­van

IN ideal weather con­di­tions Ark­low Ama­zons took on Na­van RFC in their first league match of the sea­son last week­end.

Ama­zons got off to a fly­ing start af­ter a se­ries of phases with scrum half Me­gan Meyler re­leas­ing the ball to the backs and quick hands got the ball to winger Emer Dil­lon who scored un­der the posts, a suc­cess­ful con­ver­sion from Laura Rice put Ama­zons in the lead af­ter 10 min­utes.

The Ama­zons’ pack were now dom­i­nate and a quick ruck ball from Ama­zons’ for­wards again re­leased the back out to backs and let Emer Dil­lon in for her sec­ond try un­der the posts.

From the restart a break in the Ama­zon de­fence al­lowed Na­van in for their first try of the sea­son and con­verted by their no. 10. As half-time ap­proached the Ama­zon pack barged their way over the Na­van line with num­ber 8 Sa­matha Byrne scor­ing Ama­zons’ third try. Half-time: 19-7

The sec­ond half started as good as the first with Emer Dil­lon scor­ing a hat-rick and in­creas­ing Ama­zons’ lead.

The Ark­low women worked hard and the re­ward came when Aida Gar­cia, mak­ing her rugby de­but, scored on the wing bring­ing the score to 33-7.

Ama­zons al­lowed Na­van in for their first points of the sec­ond half with a sec­ond try from the vis­i­tors.

How­ever, the ic­ing on the cake was cap­tain Claire Ni­chol­son scor­ing the last try of the match on her cap­taincy de­but.

Af­ter the match coach Trevor Prestage spoke about how this amaz­ing per­for­mance was not just from the start­ing 15 but a 22 woman squad. Ama­zons are home next week to Por­tar­ling­ton and hope to see a lot of sup­port.
