Dillon shines as Amazons run riot over Navan
IN ideal weather conditions Arklow Amazons took on Navan RFC in their first league match of the season last weekend.
Amazons got off to a flying start after a series of phases with scrum half Megan Meyler releasing the ball to the backs and quick hands got the ball to winger Emer Dillon who scored under the posts, a successful conversion from Laura Rice put Amazons in the lead after 10 minutes.
The Amazons’ pack were now dominate and a quick ruck ball from Amazons’ forwards again released the back out to backs and let Emer Dillon in for her second try under the posts.
From the restart a break in the Amazon defence allowed Navan in for their first try of the season and converted by their no. 10. As half-time approached the Amazon pack barged their way over the Navan line with number 8 Samatha Byrne scoring Amazons’ third try. Half-time: 19-7
The second half started as good as the first with Emer Dillon scoring a hat-rick and increasing Amazons’ lead.
The Arklow women worked hard and the reward came when Aida Garcia, making her rugby debut, scored on the wing bringing the score to 33-7.
Amazons allowed Navan in for their first points of the second half with a second try from the visitors.
However, the icing on the cake was captain Claire Nicholson scoring the last try of the match on her captaincy debut.
After the match coach Trevor Prestage spoke about how this amazing performance was not just from the starting 15 but a 22 woman squad. Amazons are home next week to Portarlington and hope to see a lot of support.
