Controversial plans for pub turned down
A CONTROVERSIAL planning application for a new development at Phil Healy’s in scenic Fitzwilliam Square has been turned down.
One local councillor insisted the proposal for the construction of a four- storey residential and commercial mixed use building would have destroyed the town’s streetscape.
After a previous application was turned down earlier this year, an appeal was lodged looking to demolish the popular public house Phil Healy’s and the existing residence on the corner.
Cllr. Eamonn Long said he was ‘ delighted’ that the development didn’t receive the go-ahead.
‘This is good news for the people of the town and the character of the streetscape. I consistently opposed this development as a regressive proposal, one which I felt would destroy the charm and character of the square.’
