Louts refuse to do the right thing

- DEBORAH COLEMAN

THE THOUGHTLESS and irresponsible driver on the road in front of me who cheekily flung a paper cup out the window had heavy fog and greasy roads to thank for the fact that he or she got away before I could take note of the registration number.

Bad enough was it negotiating wet and busy roads on the early morning commute without a dirty litter lout adding to the danger.

For two reasons was I utterly annoyed. Firstly, pure and simple road safety-obviously a flying piece of rubbish could have easily caused an accident, and secondly, littering – what purpose was served by this action except for the person responsible to save a two-second trip to a bin at the next stop.

Littering has always been one of my greatest pet peeves. When the good work of teachers and most parents can have kids as young as five savvy about recycling and the environment then why can certain people be so ignorant in this department?

It is a most rare occurrence to see a young child litter in public and thanks to education they are generally shocked if they see a grown up doing it.

Why do some people just refuse to do the right thing? It is lazy and disgusting and shows utter contempt for society.

The paper cup incident had me seething but this is nothing compared to the regular large bin bags of rubbish which are thrown out and burst open along the M11.

In the past few months alone I spotted, on separate occasions, a shoe, a school bag, what was possibly a jumper, and as well as an array of food wrappers at various spots.

Who are the people that are treating our roads like large scale dumping grounds?

Within town centres, what I can only describe as a scourge is blighting every footpath and road in sight.

Morning, noon and night dog owners allow their pets to run loose and leave their droppings uncleaned for the rest of us to walk in.

It's unhygienic and revolting and far from aesthetically pleasing. Nothing screams ‘unloved town' to visitors like a pavement full of unscooped poop! Where is the pride, people?

There is a prevailing stubbornness among dog owners who refuse to clean up after their pets.

Some people are so diligent in this area and lead by example while others just sneer at the thought and trot on unfazed and unembarrassed.

Who do they think should be responsible for cleaning up their dog's mess if not them? They do nothing but complain about the work of councils but are happy for them to step in for these sorts of jobs, and these are tasks which should not be left to the local authority.

This selfish and irresponsible attitude should be stamped out and not tolerated and, as they say, they can like it or lump it.
