RNLI goes to the aid of two vessels

-

WICKLOW RNLI responded to two call-outs in the past week.

On Sunday the all-weather lifeboat launched shortly after 4 p.m. after the crew of a 40ft motor cruiser reported that they had fouled their propeller near the East Codling buoy while on passage from Wales.

The motor cruiser with three people onboard was located just after 5 p.m. approximately 14 miles north of Wicklow harbour.

Lifeboat volunteers Terry Sillery and Peter McCann were transferred onto the cruiser to assess the situation and successfully cleared the entangled rope from the propeller.

With the propeller free, the cruiser got under way followed closely by the lifeboat. When Coxswain Nick Keogh was satisfied there was no damage and the cruiser was able to make good headway, the two-lifeboat crew were transferred back to the lifeboat.

The motor cruiser then resumed its journey north to Malahide while the lifeboat returned to station.

The crew on the call-out were Coxswain Nick Keogh, mechanic Brendan Copeland, Lisa O’Leary, Terry Sillery, Graham Fitzgerald and Peter McCann.

The call-out was the second of the week for the Wicklow lifeboat crew. On Thursday, they launched to assist three fishermen on a vessel with engine failure six miles off the Wicklow coast.

The all-weather lifeboat was launched shortly after 3.30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon following a launch request from the coast guard. A fishing vessel with engine failure was drifting six miles off the Wicklow coast.

The lifeboat, under the command of Coxswain Nick Keogh, was alongside the fishing vessel 20 minutes after launching. The weather on scene was wind south westerly in direction and force five with fair visibility

A towline was quickly established and the fishing vessel, with three crew, was towed back to Wicklow harbour.

The crew on the call-out were Coxswain Nick Keogh, Mechanic Brendan Copeland, Ciaran Doyle, Dave O’Leary, Terry Sillery, Graham Fitzgerald, Connie O Gara and Joe Hanlon.
