CARNEW EMMETS 1-16 ST PATRICK’S 1-09

CARNEW Emmets and St Patrick’s served up a well contested Junior Hurling Championship game played in Carnew on Wednesday evening, May 2.

The main pitch in Carnew has suffered greatly as a result of the extremely wet spring.

It has a heavy grass covering and the club are unable to use it for the present.

Consequently the old pitch has been in continuous use for all games and is showing the signs of over use.

Nevertheless, both teams adapted well to the problems of a heavy pitch and helped referee Pat Keogh of Rathvilly to a comfortable evening.

The first quarter was evenly balanced with lifting and striking being the order of the day with little chance of making progress otherwise.

Jodie Hughes at centre forward was very prominent early on for the home side notching up two points from play.

Paudie McGing, with two points from frees, was the other Carnew scorer in this quarter.

St Pat’s stayed in contention with points from play by George O’Brien, Brendan Cox, and full forward Michael O’Brien.

They also had a point from a free by Kevin Cody.

The game was level at 0-4 apiece at this stage but Carnew Emmets had the stronger second quarter.

Martin Molloy, Fionn Furlong and Jodie Byrne added points to leave the home side ahead by 0-7 to 0-4 at the break.

A goal and a point by full forward Jodie Byrne in the early minutes of the second half put a bit of daylight between the sides.

However, the visitors kept plugging away and Kevin Cody (free). John D O’Brien and Daniel O’Brien responded with three points to help keep them in touch.

Martin Molloy had a strong second half for Carnew and two points from him and another from Richard O’Hara helped to keep that comfortable gap for their side.

Two more St Pat’s points from John D and George O’Brien turned out to be the last points from the visitors until full forward Michael O’Brien netted their only goal just before the call of time.

As in the first half, Carnew had the best of the final quarter and further points from Martin Molloy.

Richard O’Hara, Joe Hughes and Jodie Byrne led to the Emmets running out comfortable winners on a score of 1-16 to 1-9.

Referee Pat Keogh was a late replacement for the appointed official and looked very comfortable on what could have been a difficult surface for a hurling game. He could get the call again.
