Disappointing turnout for meet and greet

WICKLOW GAA organised a meet and greet for both the county footballers and hurlers but all were left bitterly disappointed when only a handful of youngsters showed up.

The session was due to run from 6:30pm - 8:00pm at the Ballinakill Centre of Excellence.

At the same time, there was a full round of U-7 and U-9 hurling Go Games organised throughout the county which would have tied up a large pool of potential attendees.

Seamus Murphy’s hurlers are believed to have had limited time to attend on the evening due to their own training but a healthy number of footballers were present.

Only two fans reportedly attended initially but more - believed to be a maximum of 15 - arrived afterwards to get the autographs of Seanie Furlong et al.

County chairman Martin Fitzgerald hopes to put it in the past and revisit the situation in 2019 with a fresh approach.

“It’s something that we’ll have to look at for next year. Maybe we can have a blitz on the day. Parents are already bringing kids everywhere they’ve matches nearly every night of the week so maybe we’ll put on a blitz for next year. It’s something we’ll have to look into.

“All clubs and juvenile clubs were informed of it. It’s something we have to work on for next year.

“The way it is, we just have to move on and they (the county players) will as well. We have to work on a different approach next year.”
