HORSE DATE ENTRIES

The annual Kilmacanogue and District Horse Show Society will host its 45th Show on Saturday, July 28, in Monastery, Enniskerry.

This show raised €7,000 for some very worthwhile charities last year and you are invited once again to come along to be impressed by the showy paces of the best of Ireland’s horse breeds – from the massive Irish Draughts and the famous Connemara’s to the tiny Kerry Bog Ponies with their big personalities.

Bring the children for the pony rides, colouring competitions, treasure hunt and the friendliest dog show in Ireland. Visit the trade stands, enjoy coffee and tea and wonderful food, discover the freshly picked raspberries grown locally and exhibit your photographs. Walk for miles without realising it – a wonderful day out for people and animals of all ages.

All proceeds go to support a range of charities supporting people (undergoing cancer treatment, living with kidney disease or being rehabilitated after a spinal injury) and animals. Please save the date in your diaries and get your entries in.

VINTAGE CAR CLUB

Many enthusiasts from Kilmacanogue were with the garden of Ireland Vintage Car Club that took to the high seas on recently on route to Wrexham in the UK This was a four-day trip staying at the Moreton Park Hotel and all of the club members (thirty-one in total) enjoyed the beautiful scenic drive through North Wales, Shropshire where sixteen vintage vehicles of all makes and sizes took part.

The convoy arrived at the Hotel where they enjoyed refreshments etc. before retiring for the day. After breakfast on Saturday morning the club took to the hills of Wales ably escorted by Rita Heathcock, a native of the area, who was extremely kind in taking us to all of the nature and beauty spots in the Welsh Hills, which covered a wide area and were absolutely stunning to say the least, some of which were indescribable.

The first stop was Llangollen Motor Museum which housed an array of cars and motorbikes all privately owned, then the party travelled to the beautiful Horseshoe pass (Bwich yr Oernant) in Denbigshire North East Wales which reaches a height of 417 Metres. From there in was onto the beautiful Lake Bala which they drove around.

On Sunday having had breakfast it was time to attend a civic reception given by the mayor and Lady Mayoress of Wrexham at the town’s civic buildings where chairperson of the club Mick Nolan, on behalf of the vintage car club, presented them with a beautiful Waterford Crystal Decanter. The mayor in turn presented the club with a Welsh Crystal Paper Weight. The club then visited the British Ironworks Centre, Shropshire.

While we were attending this venue the chairperson was interviewed by local radio and TV and painted a wonderful picture of the club, its members and its activities. They expressed great interest in joining the club on the upcoming Liam Kelly Memorial Run which takes place on September 8 and nine. They were assured that the club would do everything possible to enhance their visit and the club is also delighted to hear that most of last year’s UK entrants have signed up yet again.

The garden of Ireland Vintage Car Club now looks forward to a very busy season and hopefully get a good summer. The travelling party would like to thank their PRO Ann Nolan, who did an absolute super job in organising ferries, hotels etc. for the trip, to Mick Nolan, who acted as a wonderful ambassador for the club and Shay Duffy, who was always willing with a smile to help anyone with engine trouble, as did all of the committee and members. It was a pleasure to have been in company with the entire group and most enjoyable.

The club have also commenced the evening runs prior to our monthly meetings. Just a reminder that the Tom Kennedy Memorial Static Show will take place in the Sand Pit, Ashford on Sunday, July 8, commencing at midday and anything with wheels are welcome. Stall holders also welcome. All proceeds from this show will go directly to St Ann’s Oncology Ward St Vincent’s University Hospital. To date this show has raised in excess of €12K for this very worthy cause. For further details contact Eileen at 087 8329235 or email goivcc@ gmail.com.

FAREWELL DESSIE

Many former Glencormac United FC players of the late 70s and early 80s were saddened to hear of the passing last week of Des Prendergast. Des passed away peacefully on April 29 at his home, following a short illness, bravely borne, surrounded by his devoted family.

He was the beloved son of Maisie and the late Paddy and dearly loved husband of Gretta, treasured father of Ciara, Seán and Conor, much loved brother of Brendan and Liam and the late Eamonn and Ann, and will be sadly missed also by his cherished granddaughter Ella, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

His Requiem Mass took place last Friday (fourth) in the Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace in Bray followed by burial in Kilternan Cemetery Park. Former Glens recalled many stories of the crack with Des on the playing fields and even more banter in the after match drinks where he was quiet a character and will be remembered fondly.

When it was time to hang up the boots, Des got the golf clubs out and played with some of his former teammates in Old Conna Golf Club till his illness. Farewell Des, rest in peace.

SOCCER ACTION

Thankfully the good weather continued last weekend and more soccer action took place. In the under-14 cup quarter final, the Glens have a slight first leg advantage when they defeated Ashford Rovers 1-0 in Ashford. This was a super display from everyone to bring a deserved lead back to Ryder’s for this Thursday evening second leg.

The team were really up for this game from start to finish against the inform team in the premier division and went in at half time 1-0 up when Kieren Griffiths swung in a dangerous corner and between Dean Bradshaw, Ashfords centre back and the goalie, the ball ended up in the net, and we think Harry Kane has a claim in for it also. The second half was fairly even but a few chances went a miss but good to have a lead in this one. Well done to all and to Kieren Griffiths and Ben Campbell, who signed during the week and looked very comfortable settling into their new team.

The seniors had home advantage in their Thomas Scott Divisional semi-final and used that to their benefit with a 4-2 win. It started bad for the Glens when they found themselves 0-2 down within 15 minutes. However, Stephen Kirwin smashed a brilliant penalty to the net before a fantastic Sam Kerr volley made it 2-2 at the break. Man of the match Sam Callaghan then dispatched a freekick to the net before Nay Watters sealed the win.

The Glens received huge support on the day which they are very grateful and would welcome support again this Sunday (13th) afternoon for their Wicklow Cup semi-final against Carnew in Rathdrum.
