Triathlon participants really feel the heat
CLOSE to 600 competitors took part in this year’s Harbourman Triathlon in Wicklow town, despite the challenging hot weather conditions.
The Base2Race sponsored event was organised by Wicklow Triathlon Club and consisted of a National Series Olympic Distance race, including a 1500m swim in Wicklow Harbour, a 40km cycle followed by a 10km run around the streets of Wicklow.
This year’s Harbourman took the format of a Standard Distance National Championship and drew some the best athletes from all over the country.
A total of 561 participants set off at the start of the race from Wicklow Harbour. The first person over the finishing line was Constantine Doherty with a time of 2:03:57. Kieran Jackson was second with 2:06:38, followed by Eoin Lyons of Waterford Triathlon Club in third with a time of 2:06:38.
Caroline Maria Hayes of Limerick Triathlon Club was the first woman to finish in 2:15:58. Eillen Murphy was second and Amy O’Keeffe third.
Mick Nolan of Wicklow Triathlon Club said: ‘Things couldn’t have gone any better. We had close to 600 athletes from all over the country taking part. We are getting some amazing feedback on Facebook. The town came out in support and the reception they gave the athletes was phenomenal. We had 150 marshals on duty and many of the athletes have commented that this was the friendliest triathlon they have ever taken part in.’
