Talented singers on way to Calary

THE next Music in Calary concert will be followed by an optional supper in aid of Sister Mary Killeen’s work in the Mukuru slums in Nairobi.

Performing at Calary Church on July 22 will be soprano Lorna Breen and tenor Andrew Gavin accompanie­d by pianist Mairéad Hurley.

Sr Mary Killeen, a Sister of Mercy nun, founded the MPC Rehab Centre in Nairobi in 1995 to help destitute street children. The MPC Rehab Centre is a registered non-profitable and charitable institutio­n under the umbrella of MUKURU promotion centre sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, Nairobi.

Calary parish has supported the work of Sr Mary Killeen and the MPC for many years. Each year they have a concert and supper with a bumper raffle that is generously supported by friends, family and the local community.

Lorna Breen hails from Kilbride and was recently conferred with a Masters in Music Performanc­e from Trinity College Dublin, graduating with Distinctio­n under the tutelage of Dr. Veronica Dunne and Dr. Dearbhla Collins. She was also among the big winners at this year’s ESB Feis Ceoil having won three of the Senior Vocal competitio­ns including the coveted Lieder Prize for German Song, the Dermot Troy Trophy for Oratorio and the Young Cup for Drawing Room Repertoire.

Andrew Gavin completed his Masters in Music Performanc­e at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin in 2016, achieving First Class Honours under the tutelage of Mary Brennan. He is also a graduate of the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, where he
