BirdWatch group spots 51 species during Dundalk trip

THE latest outing carried out by the Wicklow branch of BirdWatch Ireland involved a trip to Dundalk to view wintering waterbirds.

Some locals joined the Wicklow visitors for a morning birdwatchi­ng sessions at the Oscar Merne hide in Lurgangree. A group of birders from Bangor, County Down were involved in the afternoon walk along the Navy Bank.

A total of 51 different bird species were spotted, including Black-tailed Godwit, Blue Tit, Cormorant, Dunlin, Golden Plover, Great Black-backed Gull, Grey Heron, Herring Gull, House Sparrow, Kingfisher, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Magpie, Meadow Pipit, Mute Swan, Redshank, Robin, Black-headed Gull, Blackbird, Buzzard, Curlew, Feral Pigeon, Goldfinch, Greenshank, Grey Plover, Hooded Crow, Jackdaw, Lapwing, Little Egret, Mallard, Mistle Thrush, Oystercatc­her, Ringed Plover, Rook, Shelduck, Starling, Teal, Wigeon, Wren, Shag, Snipe, Stonechat, Turnstone, Woodpigeon, Brent Goose, Common Gull, Greylag Goose, Knot, Chaffinch, Curlew Sandpiper, Dunnock and Ruff

A reminder that Steve Wing, Cape Clear Wildlife Officer, will deliver a talk on the birds and other wildlife of Cape Clear at the Glenview Hotel on Tuesday, November 13, starting at 8 p.m.

There will be a garden bird workshop held at the East Coast Nature Reserve on Saturday, November 24. The meeting point is at the main entrance on Sea Road for 10 a.m.

On Tuesday, December 11, ‘Birds of Twelve Days of Christmas’ takes place at the Glenview Hotel from 8 p.m. The talk will involve an exploratio­n, in word, image and sound, of birds linked to the song, with some poetic licence, such as Turtle Doves, Partridges and drumming Woodpecker­s.

A birdwatchi­ng outing suitable for children takes place at Greystones Harbour on Saturday, December 15.
