Arklow athletes complete the 2018 Dublin City Marathon

- By DEBORAH COLEMAN

ATHLETES from the Arklow area returned home with a sparkling, hard-earned medal in their possession having recently completed the 2018 Dublin City Marathon.

Local veteran runner Mary Nolan Hickey, who herself completed her 39th consecutive Dublin City Marathon, every single one since the event started, was joined by her fellow athletes each one of whom crossed the finish line with pride. The runners train with a variety of local clubs and some train with Mary.

‘Every single person did very well. There were some fantastic personal bests and some first timers who were delighted to finish. They conditions were very good on the day, dry and crisp – perfect for running a marathon,’ Mary said.

Mary ran the marathon this year for Wicklow Hospice in tribute to fellow athlete Tony Hickey who passed away in recent months. He too completed every marathon since the event’s inception, even last year as he battled terminal illness.

Mary, as the only remaining woman in the county to have run each Dublin Marathon, already has big plans for her 40th event and is hoping to get 40 athletes to run it with her, all in aid of Wicklow Hospice.
