Some tenants are living in ‘Dickensian’ era conditions

-

November 1986

TENANTS living in old council houses in Bray without bathroom and hot water facilities are still living in the ‘Dickensian era’ it was claimed this week.

The description came from Cllr Noel Keyes who said that such people had to put their baths in front of the fire if they wished to wash.

He was supporting a motion by Cllr Brigid Hannon calling on Bray Urban Council to apply to the Department of the Environment for approval and finance on a phased basis for the upgrading and installation of bathroom and hot water facilities to bring these houses up to a modern standard.

Cllr Keyes said that such a situation was intolerable in this day and age and that the council could not clap itself on the back about other achievements when this was going on.

Assistant County Manager Brian Johnston promised that an application will be made.

He said that the council was currently getting together ‘the bones to form the basis of an application’.
