GAELFHÍSEÁN NA BLIANA
On Thursday, November 22, we welcomed Pól Ó Finn from Conradh na Gaeilge to the school to present the €1,000 prize to the fifth year students as they were recently chosen as the winners of Gaelfhíseán na Bliana for Co. Chill Mhantáin. Pól congratulated the students involved on their great achievement and commended them on their positive attitude to the Irish language. The prize money received will be awarded to three fifth year students in the form of a scholarship to the Gaeltacht during the summer. Comhghairdeas arís do na daltaí agus na múinteoirí a bhí bainteach leis an bhfíseán.
GAEILGE 24
Ar an 21 Samhain, ghlac na daltaí ón gCiorcal Cainte páirt san fheachtas ‘Gaeilge 24’. Labhair na daltaí atá sa chúigiú agus sa séú bliain Gaeilge ar feadh 24 uair an chloig. Bhí an t-uafás Gaeilge le cloisteáil timpeall na scoile i rith an lae. D’eagraigh na cailíní Díolachán Cáca ag am sosa agus ag am lóin agus bhí slua ollmhór ann ag ceannach agus ag díol cácaí trí mhean na Gaeilge. Bhaineamar go léir taitneamh as an lá. Mar a deir an seanfhocal ‘Beatha teanga í a labhairt.’.
On November 21, members of the Ciorcal Cainte took part in the national campaign, Gaeilge 24. The students involved from fifth year and sixth year spoke Irish for 24 hours. As part of the celebration of the day, the students organised a cake sale through Irish at break and lunch time. A great day was enjoyed by all and well done to all students for taking part.
DEBATING
Congratulations to the Concern Debate team ; Bella Byrne, Leah Weldon, Liadan O’Sullivan, Alice Keenan and researcher Lucy Byrne, who were awarded a unanimous win against Coláiste Craobh Abhann, Kilcoole. The girls successfully defeated the motion that the Global Population Time bomb is being diffused. We wish them continued success in their next debate in December against Presentation College, Bray.
SOCCER
On Wednesday, November 26, the under-17 Soccer team put in a great performance in Wicklow town when they played Coláiste Chill Mhantain. St Mary’s were on top from the start. After 10 minutes a great through ball was played by Lucy McAnaspie which found Aoife Kavanagh, who controlled it beautifully and slotted it home.
St Mary’s stayed on top but could not get the ball in the goal hitting the post a number of times and there were some great saves made by the opposition’s keeper. Late in the second half Lucy McAnaspie found the ball at her feet in the box and managed to finish the game off by putting a second in the CCM goal.
Final score 0-2. Woman of the match performance went to Lucie Kindlon. Well done, girls.
THEATRE TRIP/WORKSHOPS
On Thursday, November 22, all of the Transition Year classes went to see the play ‘Asking For It’ by Louise O’Neill in the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. The play was about sexual abuse among teenagers and how this could affect your whole life. Before the students saw the play there were two workshops to introduce the students to acting, how a book is made into a play and how a play looks backstage. All in all, it was a very intense play but definitely memorable. (Sarah Sedlbauer F4)
F3 SCIENCE
On Friday, November 23, the Form three Science students enjoyed an educational trip to Dublin Zoo. The students had workshops on Sustainability and Evolution plus a chance to see some of the animals.
