WICKLOW ROVERS

-

The senior men’s A team made it five wins on the bounce when they beat Esker Celtic at Whitegates last Saturday.

They got off to a dream start when they were 2-0 up after seventeen minutes with goals coming on fifteen and seventeen minutes.

Ciaran McGettigan started the scoring after quarter of an hour with a fine strike, Gareth Murphy doubled the lead two minutes later to give the lads control of the game early on.

The lads should have added a couple of more goals before the break but it remained 2-0 at the interval.

The away side came more into it after the restart and had a couple of good chances to reduce the deficit.

Rovers were reduced to ten men on the hour mark for a second bookable offence but this just seem to spur the lads on, five minutes after the dismissal Gareth Murphy was fouled in the area and the lads were awarded a penalty.

Jim Foley coolly fired the resulting penalty into the bottom right hand corner of the net.

Two goals in a minute at the seventy minute mark put the game to bed, first Gareth Murphy cheekily lobbed the advancing keeper, rounded the keeper and nodded the dropping ball into the empty net.

Then Tommy Smullen registered his first of the season to make it 5-0 and three very important points were well and truly sealed.

This win moves the lads into second place two points behind leaders Ardmore Rovers with two games in hand.

The only team in junior action was our under 15 girls and they produced an excellent comeback from 3-1 down at the break to gain a share of the spoils in a thrilling 3-3 draw away to Lakelands.

A well taken brace from Molly Sweeney and a coolly converted penalty from Sorcha Cull ensured the girls maintain their unbeaten record in the league.

Trials for next season’s under 16’s [Born 2003] will take place on the Rocky Road on Thursday 13th December from 7pm to 8.30pm. There will be a second trial in January [date to be confirmed].
