GIRLS BASKETBALL

The CCA under-16 girls basketball team travelled to Arklow to play in the semi-final of the Wicklow School Girls League on Monday, December 3. Their opponents, St Mary’s Arklow, finished the play off stages at the top of the league, so with this in mind, and with a few players missing due to injury. The team knew that it would not be an easy game.

St Mary’s came out very strong in the first quarter, however CCA worked their way back into the game throughout the second quarter to go into half time only one basket behind.

CCA came out very strong in the final quarter with Alyssia Larkin making a brilliant shot from behind the three point line to put CCA one point ahead. CCA managed to hold onto this one point lead in the final minute with very good defence from Eve Leacy, Lucy Toomey and Siobhán D’Arcy.

This win sees them go through to the final which will be held in Oblate Hall on December 12. Congratulations to all the girls and their coach Ms Nolan.

BOYS UNDER-17 SOCCER

The under-17 soccer team had a convincing 4-2 win over Presentation, Bray in Greystones.

Dylan Fitzsimons scored a hattrick in a man of the match performance with the other goal coming from Jack Elliott.

The team will next face Templecarrig, Greystones next week in their last league game before Christmas. They can now look forward to a Wicklow/Wexford league semi-final game after the holidays.

CHRISTMAS CAROLS

CCAs music students have been busy bringing the Christmas festive sprit to Wicklow with a variety of performances of Christmas carols taking place throughout the week.

On Monday the 10th there was a Sing-along with the residents in St Coleman’s Rathdrum. On Tuesday the 11th there was a Carols service in Kilcoole Church in conjunction with students from Kilcoole Primary School.

On Wednesday the 12th a Singalong will take place in Kilmullen Centre, Newcastle. On Thursday the 13th, a variety of carols will be performed in the GP area at 11 a.m. for the whole school, with a carol service taking place for first years in the GP area during period 8 and 9.

Wishing Ms Armstrong and all the music students the very best of luck for all their performances.

REMEMBRANCE TREE

Every Christmas, the CCA Remembrance Tree is placed in the GP area to remind us of our past family members and friends.

TY students made white star decorations, on which the name of the person to be remembered is written and then hung on the tree.

People are invited to make a donation, with all funds going towards the Wicklow Hospice. Thanks to Ms Cluskey and the TY students who set up this event. A special thanks to Christopher Kavanagh, who donated the decorations and Christmas tree.

CHRISTMAS JUMPER

The Student Council will hold their annual Christmas jumper non-uniform day on Thursday, December 13.

Students and staff of CCA are asked to join in the festive spirit by dusting off their finest Christmas jumpers to raise money for ‘Their Lives Matter’ charity, who are a charity run hospital in Tanzania treating children with cancer. They do amazing work and our support will go a long way to saving lives there.

The Student Council wish to thank everyone for their generous contributions and wish everyone a very merry and peaceful Christmas.

CCA CHRISTMAS FAIR

The CCA Christmas market took place on Saturday, December 8, in Coláiste Chraobh Abhann from 10.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The market was organised through the Business Department and the TY students who had an opportunity to sell their products they created during Enterprise Week. There was a Santa’s grotto, Christmas trees on sale and lots of stocking fillers for Christmas gifts. Thanks to everyone who came out to support.

Congratulations to Aoife Ni Chuinn, Anna Reynolds and Hugo Dunne, who took first, second and third places at the EUREKA Schools’ STEM National Poster Competition titled, ‘Believe in Science’. The competition was run as part of Science Week during November and was hosted by the Institute of Technology, Carlow, as part of their Science Week activities.

The students’ posters are currently on display in the Shaw Room in Carlow County Library on Tullow Street. The students were presented with their prizes in the Institute of Technology in Carlow recently.

Congratulations to Nicholas Pochinkov (class of 2018) who has been awarded a Trinity College Entrance Exhibition Award 2018. Under the new Entrance Exhibition Awards scheme in TCD only one student from each school is awarded an Entrance Exhibition Award. We commend Nicholas on this achievement following on his Naughton Scholarship Award in October and wish him continued success on his academic journey.

WINTER BALL 2018

to a high-wiring adventure centre called Zipit. This centre is based in Tibradden Wood near the Dublin mountains. A fun-filled day was had by all the students and the accompanying teachers, Ms O’Shea and Mr Walsh. A smaller group went to Croke Park and did the Stadium and Skyline tour. Ms Ni Mhuircu accompanied this group and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

A forthcoming trip is scheduled to go ice-skating in Dundrum in December. This will get the students into the Christmas spirit early and a good day will be had by all.

THEATRE TRIPS

scored by Ryan Fitzpatrick with Mason Kelly scoring the third. The remainder of the St Kilan’s goals were scored by the second years on the team. Nathan Horan and Kieran Griffith scoring two each, with Jake Ebbs and Emanuel Florea, both scoring one apiece. The St Kilian’s defense (made up of Cian Ebbs, Jamie Coey, Ronan Carney, Cerdick Daygo and David O’Brien) all put in a very good performance and should be proud of their efforts. Daniel Waldron in goals pulled off some fabulous saves and directed his defence extremely confidently. Pablo Cueto made his debut for St Kilian’s and we are delighted to have his Spanish talent on board.

Well done to all who took part and to Mr Donohoe, their inspirational trainer.

EAST GLENDALOUGH 2 ST KILIAN’S 1 – This game was played on Wednesday, November 21, in Greystones United Astro and St Kilian’s were very unfortunate to come out on the wrong side of this result. Played in terrible conditions, the boys gave it their all, but it just was not their day in front of the goals.

St Kilian’s started the game very slowly and this probably was a result of the driving rain and they found themselves one nil down after 10 minutes. But they managed to get control of possession and dominated the rest of the first half, creating a number of very good chances, the best of which found the back of the net by Kamil Mazur, from a great cross by Nathan Horan. St Kilian’s continued to press forward into the second half but came up against a very strong defense and a very determined goal keeper, who just managed to prevent the boys from scoring. Mid way through this half, East Glendalough hit St Kilian’s on a counter attack and punished them for missed chances. The lads didn’t ‘down the heads’ but tried to find an equaliser right into the dying moments of the game but sadly this was not their fate.

Well done to the full panel who turned up in such terrible conditions and gave it their very best, and very well done too to their intrepid trainer Mr Donohoe.
