ACTIVE RETIREMENT

On behalf of the members I would like to thank Margaret Brady and Anne Thornton for organising our Christmas Dinner which took place in Hunters Hotel. It was a wonderful afternoon and enjoyed by everyone. I would also like to say a special Thank you to Mary Graham for the wonderful entertainm­ent, without her it would not be the same. Our next meeting will be on January 8, when nomination papers will be distribute­d for the AGM which takes place in February. Our speaker in January will be Conor, the librarian in Aughrim Library. On behalf of the committee I would like to wish all our members a very happy Christmas and every good wish for 2019.

CHURCH OF THE SACRED HEART

The Avondale Voices Choir will be Singing Sacred Music and Christmas Carols at Vigil Mass on this Saturday, December 15, and all are welcome to attend.

LOTTO

The numbers 6, 10, 16 and 22 were drawn in the sports club lotto on Monday last, December 3, The jackpot was not won. The match-three winners were Mervyn Stephenson, Brigid Mulkern, David, Catriona and Martin, c/o May O’Brien, Phil Byrne and Kathleen Keogh. The jackpot is €4,350.

MIKEL MURFI RETURNS TO CARNEW

Theatre goers will be delighted to hear of an upcoming theatre treat in January. Coláiste Bhríde are delighted to announce that Mikel Murfi will perform his new play ‘I Hear You and Rejoice’, in St Brigid’s Hall Carnew on Thursday, January 31, for one night only.

This play is a sequel to his previous play ‘The Man in the Woman’s Shoes’. He has toured in London, New York and Edinburgh with this new play so it will be great to see him return to our local community.

Tickets will cost €16 each and will include a cheese and wine reception. They can be booked by calling 086 8500607 or calling into the school reception. These tickets would make for a wonderful gift this Christmas, so book your tickets to avoid disappoint­ment.

AVOCA GAA LOTTO

Results for December 5. Winning numbers were 8, 9, 11 and 27. No jackpot winner. Three match-three winners: Andy Doyle (Avoca), Mary Cahill (Avoca NS) and Nicole Keogh (Avoca) who each received €35. Seller’s prize: Darren Keogh. The next draw takes place on December 12 when the jackpot will be €1,300.

AVOCA SENIOR CITIZENS

The Avoca senior citizens extend their sincere thanks to Myles Doyle and the staff at the Avoca Recycling Centre for all their generous donations to our senior citizen fund from the proceeds of the Clothes Recycling scheme. This scheme is supporting many local charities so please think of them when clearing out your hot press and wardrobes. Our heartfelt thanks go out to all who contribute and collect for our local senior citizens, especially at this time of year.

Cool greany Johnstown VINTAGE CLUB AGM

The First annual general meeting of our Vintage Club will take place in the Coolgreany Inn on Wednesday, December 12, at 8.30 p.m. Following on from our very successful Vintage Day, we hope to have a good attendance.

GAA CLUB AGM

The Castletown Liam Mellows AGM takes place Friday, December 14, at 8 p.m. in the clubhouse, Tomnahealy, Castletown. Everyone welcome to come along.

INCH PARISH CHURCH

The festival of seven Lessons and Carols is on Sunday, December 16, at 3 p.m. Followed by tea and Santa Visit. Everyone welcome.

45 CARD DRIVE

A very successful 45 Card Drive is ongoing in the Coolgreany Inn on each Friday night at 8.30 p.m., everyone is very welcome to come along for a good night of craic at the cards, and some lovely finger food thrown in for good measure.

50TH BIRTHDAY

Congratula­tions to Norah Finn, Newtown, Coolgreany (local Postmistre­ss) who celebrated her 50th birthday in the Coolgreany Inn last weekend accompanie­d by her husband Ray, daughter Ciara, and son Brendan. A large number of family and friends attended and enjoyed a great night of entertainm­ent and beautiful finger food. A special feature on the night was Norah’s husband Ray being accompanie­d on the pipes by another piper friend leading a parade with the birthday cake carried by Ciara, and then followed by Brendan with a bouquet of flowers. A great night was has by all.

COMMUNITY ALERT

The local Community Group are reminding all members of our community to look out for all members of our community who may be living alone and might need someone to help with getting their everyday needs, or a small bit of company for a while during the day. A small little bit of concern for others goes a long way to help take away the stress and worries of many people who feel they are left alone in life. Please keep a lookout for others and be vigilant at all times.

TIDY TOWNS

The Tidy Towns Committee would like to thank Coolgreany Vintage Club for their very generous donation of €2,000 to their committee, which no doubt will be well spent for the village. A big thanks also to the ‘Wind Farm’ for their help in supporting the erection of a notice board in the picnic area for all to view and read the notes and it is also wheelchair accessible, and a history of the village on one side.

The committee also had success at the keep Wexford Beautiful, with two highly commended awards and also an award for the New Walking Trail in Gurteen/Ballyfad Wood. A big thanks to C K Signs and staff for looking after us so well.

Rathdrum CHRISTMAS CAROLS

A Christmas Carols Service will take place in St Mary and St Michael’s Parish Church at 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 16. Everyone is welcome.

PARNELL ATHLETIC CLUB

The Winners of the 1-mile road race in Avondale were Eithne Walsh, Inverdee Club and Mick Byrne. The Juvenile winners were under-eight Harry Kileen, under-12 Aaron Fitzmorris, Inverdee, Hugh Kelly, Junior Girls under-eight – Ciara Winterbott­om. Under-10 Helen Winterbott­om, under-12 Marie Zakharenka. Junior Bonnie Bel King. Congratula­tions to all participan­ts. Our next 5k Race is on New Years Day a great way to start off 2019.

The club continues to celebrate the winning of Gold and Bronze medals, with another great night hosted by Noel and Helen Jacob to honour Mick Byrne.

SYMPATHY

The community extend their sympathy to the wife, Ann, and family of Mick Byrne, Bolenskea, Glenmalure and also the family of Catherine Mary Byrne on the recently passing of their loved ones.

PRIDE OF PLACE

In recognitio­n of Rathdrum winning best town catergory (1000-2000) in Pride of Place we are holding an event in Jacobs Well on Thursday, December 13, starting at 8 p.m. This event is open to people who volunteer within Rathdrum to acknowledg­e their help and dedication.
