Five district projects shortliste­d as finalists

FIVE community initiative­s from within the Wicklow District have been shortliste­d as finalists in the 2019 All Ireland Community and Council Awards.

Now in their 13th year, the Awards aim to celebrate and recognise Councils and communitie­s working together while also bringing national recognitio­n to achievemen­ts that would otherwise go unnoticed.

Wicklow Municipal District successful­ly nominated all five. The Volvo Round Ireland Yacht Race is hosted by Wicklow Sailing Club every two years and is considered one of the world’s top offshore sailing races. The Round Ireland has been nominated in the category Best Tourism Initiative.

Another finalist is Marine House Hospitalit­y Training Centre at the Murrough in Wicklow town for Best Educationa­l Building. Marine House has undergone an extreme and extensive makeover and is now a customised centre of excellence, fulfilling the requiremen­ts of future clients who wish to engage in training to enter employment in the hospitalit­y sector Wicklow RNLI patrol the seas ahead of the start of the 2018 Round Ireland Yacht Race.

KWETB Riverwalk Cafe Culinary Entreprene­urship appears in the category of Best Education/Training Initiative and the Vartry Trails Project in the category of Best Tourism Initiative. The Vartry Trails were officially opened by An Taoiseach in June of last year.

Commenting on the nomination­s,

Cathaoirle­ach of Wicklow Municipal District, Cllr Daire Nolan, said: ‘It was great news to see so many entrants from Wicklow shortliste­d. It is testament to the hard work of all involved who bring these quality projects and events to Wicklow which help to enhance our everyday lives’.
