Boys soccer pitch ploughed up

-

January 1984

Over 80 young Bray soccer players are facing a short season following the destruction of their pitch this week.

Parents in Fassaroe Park were furious on Tuesday when they discovered that a field they had hired as a pitch at the beginning of the soccer season had been ploughed up.

Although the ploughing was carried out by an inidividual who had leased the field for growing purposes previous to the Fassaroe residents, it is not clear who ordered the move.

Residents spent Tuesday night attempting to find out who was responsible, but on Wednesday morning the answer was not clear.

The parents are understandably furious over the occurrence having spent considerable time and effort leasing the field and preparing it as a soccer pitch.

Said Mrs Ann Brien, ‘the field had been used as a camping site by travellers before we leased it and we had to organise a big clean-up. We all got together, did the job and marked out the pitch. All our work has been ruined now that it has been ploughed.’

Only recently the residents were commended by members of Bray Urban Council in their initiative in leasing the field for soccer and agreed to finance the cost of putting up a fence around the field. This has not yet been done.

The field is situated on the Dublin side of Fassaroe Park and Old Conna Avenue. IT’s used by seven schoolboy soccer teams from fAssaroe who now look like facing a series of away games for the remainder of the season.
