45 card drive will be on in Glenealy Village Hall this Thursday night, January 10. ICA WICKLOW DRAMA FESTIVAL
Enjoy a wealth of drama at the ICA Wicklow Federation 64th Drama Festival from Friday, January 18, to Sunday, January 20, in Glenealy Village Hall. Curtain up each night at 7.30 p.m. This is an open festival with six One-act Plays and eight Sketches/Short plays over three nights. STAGEBRATZ
The successful and long-established Stagebratz starz are excited to bring their well-renowned theatre classes to Glenealy Village Hall. Offering jam-packed weekly classes of singing, dancing, Acting and musical Theatre for four – 17 years, there is something to appeal to everyone. With shows, Performances and competitions each year, we focus on bringing out the confidence and love of the stage in every little star.

INDOOR BOWLS

COTTAGE MARKET
The cottage market, located in the Glenealy Garden Centre, takes place every Saturday from 10 a.m. till 3 p.m. The market features local and organic vegetables, freshly baked breads, cakes and savouries, as well as jams, chutneys and tarts. Locally produced wild honey is on offer as are healthy Aloe products. Beautiful wood turned pieces, artisan gifts such as delicate dried flower crafts, tea, coffee and healthy snacks are also available. So come along, support local Wicklow producers and enjoy the atmosphere in our little cottage market.
PILATES CLASSES
There is pilates classes in Glenealy Village Hall on Tuesday evenings from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Friday mornings from 9.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. Beginners/improvers and all ages welcome. Seven classes for €70 or drop-in-rate €12. Pilates strengthens core muscles, improves muscle control, flexibility, co-ordination, strength and tone, as well as alignment and breathing. GYMBOREE
Gymboree play and music classes continue every Tuesday mornings at 11 a.m. in Glenealy Village Hall. suitable for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers from six months – four years. Teach your child a love of music through songs, dance, movement fun and musical instruments, exploring various different music styles. Booking is essential as places are limited. SATURDAYS PLAYGROUP
The Saturdays playgroup meet in Glenealy village on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to midday. Fun play for pre-school children and up. Cost is €3 per family.

Another sad passing took place when Jenneke (Jen) Bouman of Stilebawn, Glencormac died on January 2 aged 92 in the care of staff at St Vincent’s University Hospital, following a brief illness.
Jen will be fondly remembered not only by all her family and friends in her birthplace of the Netherlands but her many friends in Ireland where she has lived since the 70s, and particularly all her neighbours in Stilebawn that knew this wonderful character that was always so ‘Happy-golucky’.
A celebration of Jen’s life will be held in Colliers Funeral Home, Old Connaught Avenue, Bray this Thursday (January 10) at 11.30 a.m. if you would like to attend as the cremation afterwards is private.
THE LATE TED GUNNING R.I.P.
The opening lecture of the Kilmacanogue History Society took place recently in the Glenview Hotel. Titled ‘The Redmonds – A political dynasty 1891 – 1952’ it was presented by Patrick McCarthy PhD.
In his talk, Dr Patrick McCarthy posed and answered many questions such as: how did Redmond, a quiet reserved landowner who lived in County Wicklow, form an electoral bond with the working class in Waterford city despite the opposition of the Catholic Church?
How did he build on his initial success and how did he serve his loyal followers? Why did this bond persist after his death, resulting in the return of his son, William, to parliament against the Sinn Fein electoral tidal wave in 1918? How did it come to pass on William’s passing in 1932 that his young widow, Bridget, represented Waterford till her death in 1952, bringing to an end a remarkable political dynasty?
Pat’s talk also illustrated, in passing, the muscular nature of some election contests in that era – contests that were accompanied by a frightening level of street violence.
Patrick himself proved a most interesting presenter. He graduated with a doctorate in Chemistry at UCD, and pursued a professional career in the Irish Pharmaceutical Industry. He has also published articles on Irish military history in the Irish Sword, the journal of the Military History Society of Ireland; he is currently Hon. Correspondence secretary of that society. The society have more interesting lecturers lined up for the 2019, next up will take place on Tuesday, February 5, at 8 p.m. in the Glenview Hotel. All are welcome with entrance for new members just €4.
