HURRY TO THE CURRY: Arklow RNLI fundraiser Hurry to the Curry returns on Friday, January 18. This year marks the 50th anniversar­y of the event which was started by Dan Kearon who brought back curry recipes from his work as a ship’s captain over many years. Music this year will be provided by Gravity followed by a DJ to keep the party going after the food has been served. A hot and cold buffet featuring an array of delicious seafood and of course curry will be cooked up by head chef Anne Lynch Mordaunt and her kitchen crew. There will be a variety of desserts to satisfy those with a sweet tooth too. The event has been a highlight in the January social calendar for five decades now, and a great night is always enjoyed by guests. Support is greatly appreciate­d by the RNLI which is run entirely by volunteers and by funds raised. Doors open at 8 p.m. sharp.

WICKLOW ICA DRAMA FESTIVAL: The 64th Wicklow ICA Drama Festival takes place in Glenealy Village Hall over three nights from January 18 to January 20 at 7.30 p.m.. There are two sections in the festival. Section A for one act plays or a single act from a full length play and Section B for sketches. Delgany 1CA, Ashford ICA, Delgany D.S, Bray Arts, Balally Players and St Patrick’s D.S will present a great selection of One Acts. Ballycoog ICA, Avoca ICA, Clooney Quin ICA, Ashford ICA, Delgany D.S, Dalkey Players, Ballinteer Drama and St Patrick’s D.S will present a variety of Sketches/Short plays. The adjudicato­r will be Eileen Brandon. Tickets cost €10.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: Blessingto­n Musical and Dramatic Society will present Little Red Riding Hood in the Tramway Theatre in Blessingto­n. Tickets can be purchased from Hennessey’s Next Door or the Office Shop. They cost €12 each or €40 for family of four. The panto takes place on Thursday, January 17 and Friday, January 18, at 8 p.m., Saturday, January 19, at 2 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. and Sunday, January 20, at 2 p.m.

GALA BALL: A gala ball taking place in the Parkview Hotel, Newtown on Friday, January 18, will help raise funds for the charity Suicide or Survive. The night starts at 7.30 p.m. and is being organised by Karl and Kelly McKenna and will feature a champagne reception, a four course meal and loads of entertainm­ent. There will also be live music, DJ, an auction and a raffle on the night. Tickets cost €35 and are available from the hotel.

ROSIE SCREENING: The film ‘Rosie’ will be screened at Mermaid Arts Centre on Monday, January 21, at 8 p.m. From the pen of Roddy Doyle and directed by Paddy Breathnac (Viva), Rosie is the story of a family without a home. Rosie (Sarah Greene), a mother of four, alongside her partner John Paul, do everything in their power to protect their children and maintain their dignity as the Irish housing crisis threatens their family’s safety and unity. Rosie balances the care of her children alongside the search for a new home. Tickets from mermaidart­scentre.ie.

ROCKET INTO 2019: Rocket into 2019 with Janice Valentine at Whale Theatre on Thursday, at 8 p.m. The purpose of the event is to make 2019 the one to turn aspiration­s into actions. Janice will inspire everyone to propel themselves into the new year with positivity and determinat­ion. In a fun and informal evening, she will provide insight into the role goals play in lives and why people stumble to realise them. There will be tips on how to measure happiness and wellbeing, and tools to support people to maximise happiness through vision, goals and action. Tickets are €10 at whaletheat­re.ie.

FIRST 100 YEARS: Mary Coughlan, Theo Dorgan, Sonamus, Annette Cleary, Rachel Factor and Eamon Sweeney will join the Irish Chamber Orchestra at Mermaid Arts Centre on Thursday, January 17, for ‘The First 100 Years’. In 1919 the first Dáil convened in Dublin and the first democratic programme for government was devised. There have been changes in Irish society over the last century that would have been inconceiva­ble to those first TDs. This very special concert will reflect on 100 years of the Irish Republic through poetry, music and song including a newly composed work by Fiachra Trench. Tickets are €18 and €16 concession at mermaidart­scentre.ie.
