Works on traffic lights to commence on Thursday

-

RELIEF is in sight for frustrated Wicklow motorists after it was revealed that traffic lights at the Grand Hotel junction will finally be fixed this Thursday.

A problem with the ducting for the traffic lights means motorists are being delayed, even at times when there is little or no traffic on the roads.

The unavailability of a contractor was the main reason for the delayed works.

Speaking at Monday’s meeting of Wicklow Municipal District, Cllr Irene Winters lamented the fact that the prob- lem at the traffic lights had existed for close to a year.

‘I saw online where instead of ducting, companies can set the lights by Bluetooth. If companies meant to fix the traffic lights in the traditional way aren’t showing up then we need to think about companies who can use Bluetooth to set the traffic light times. It would be particularly beneficial during times we know are going to be busy in the town, like when the Round Ireland is taking place for instance. At the moment we are getting no where and it has nearly been a year,’ said Cllr Winters.

Cllr Mary Kavanagh stated: ‘We are mentioning this problem every monthly meeting. It would be nice to see it finally dealt with’.

As the meeting drew to a close, District Engineer Kevin Scanlon revealed that he had just received a text message from the contractor confirming that the works would be carried out on Thursday.

‘Hopefully then we won’t know ourselves on Friday morning,’ commented Cllr Winters.
