Doctor Torreggiani loved his time working as a GP in Tinahely
THE death of popular south Wicklow GP Dr Ferdinand Cassar Torreggiani came as sad news to many throughout the community of Tinahely and surrounding townlands.
Dr Torreggiani passed away at home on Saturday, January 26, surrounded by loved ones, after a long illness. He was 83 years old.
Ferdinand Cassar Torreggiani was born in Malta on October 18, 1935.
He came to Ireland as a young man and studied in the royal college of surgeons and qualified in 1963.
A year later he married Dublin native Ann and in 1967 they relocated to his native Malta, where he worked as a GP until returning to Ireland in 1979.
It was at this time, that Dr Torreggiani took up the position of GP in Tinahely which he held until he retired in 2006 at the age of 70.
He loved his work and was very popular in the community, having helped countless local families through difficult times over the years.
His death was regretted by many who each shared their own stories and memories of how Dr Torreggiani had helped them.
Dr Torreggiani had quite a few hobbies, which retirement facilitated, such as golf, reading, and stamp collecting. He also enjoyed building model ships and planes.
Dr Torreggiani, predeceased by his brother Alex, is survived by his wife Ann, children Susanne, William, Francesca and Justine, and grandchildren Aaron, Rebecca, Rachel, Luke, Emma and Tara, sons-in-law Fergus and Adrian, daughter-in-law Martina, brothers Raymond, William, Hadrian and John, sistersin-law, Margaret, extended family, relatives and friends.
